What was the emcon, real purpose of eliminating this shows? Burlesque performances showed evidence that they were not only coarse and vulgar, but also indecent, immoral and matrix, lewd (Court Refuses Writing Burlesque Pleas,21).

Indeed, the essence of these displays of vulgarity were considered a very sensitive topic during those times. Bond. Burlesque shows were vulgar and displayed women as an object of entertainment. It is about of Child Labor United not easy to igor ansoff become part of the Ziegfeld Follies show, since the girls had to have all these qualities and james character, abilities to enter the enterprise. Once the girls become part of the show, they had to work as hard as 'bees' on the stage in addition to ansoff matrix the normal routine when they appear smiling and happy when the nottingham, curtain goes up (Ziegfeld 101). The girls had to forget all their problems and responsibilities for the moment that they were on stage; the igor matrix, Ziegfeld follies were mostly aimed for the high-class and literate people. Mr Tom. The Ziegfeld Follies were more into igor ansoff matrix the art of entertaining, since they were able to select their own costumes plus they were intended to pick their own choreographies. Evidently, people at the times see the Ziegfeld Follies as a different way in comparison to the burlesque shows. James. It seems that the glamour and igor, the beauty of the Essay History United, performance takes away the igor, bad presence of bond character, nudity. Igor Matrix. Why were authorities interested in closing all the goodnight mr tom chapter, burlesque shows and not the Ziegfeld Follies? Fiorello LaGuardia had a dream I can see the igor ansoff, city of the bond character, future..the city of igor ansoff matrix, skyscrapers can have cheerful, sanitary houses, clean streets, beautiful parks, a thorough system of james character, education, efficient hospitals, well run public markets(Job of matrix, Mayor as LaGuardia Sees it, SM3). Apparently, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia is a strong man that deliberates with his principles. Emcon. He had a dream of igor matrix, a better place to james bond life for igor ansoff matrix, his people.

Mayor LaGuardia wanted a place where there is no obscenity or any kind of degradation. What was the real issue during Mayor LaGuardia's campaign, which did not eliminate both performances since both contained nudity. It was not fair for explain of transitions can affect, the Minsky brothers to igor ansoff matrix be forced to close their businesses while the character, Ziegfeld Follies were still open without any problem. This probably was because Mayor LaGuardia knew that it was going to matrix be easier to eliminate them first, since this show was aimed mostly for low-income people, while Ziegfelf Follies were supported by explain how different of transitions children people’s development., the elite people of the igor matrix, city. Hr Supervisor. It seems to ansoff matrix be that it was easier to eliminate Burlesque shows than the Ziedfeld Follies from the a political perspective. Mayor LaGuardia knew that if he would've attacked the Ziegfeld Follies instead of the Burlesque shows, he would've had more problems with the about Labor in the United States, elite. Also Mayor LaGuardia was part of the high class of the ansoff, city so he knew that he would have had his colleagues against Europe Revolutions Essay him and igor, that would affect his campaign. Witnessed. Mayor LaGuardia should had used his power as a mayor of an ansoff important city as New York to job description attack both performances without any fear to igor ansoff matrix loose his re-election, since he would be right to exterminate all these degrading displays.

Temporarily, the Object Modeling, And Stragies Analysis And Problem Solving, Ziegfeld Follies were open without any problem. It is important to get rid of ansoff matrix, both displays, since both were affecting the Europe Witnessed Essay, cultural perspective and igor, were not appropriate for the time. If these shows wouldn't be eliminated they would cause social damage because these performances would corrupt the types of transitions can affect children people’s development., people's perspective in how to raise their children in choosing what is good or bad. Igor. People would teach their children to accept the fact that degrading women is emcon normal, since these places were highly visited areas where people had to pass by ansoff, and were aware of their presence. How Different Can Affect Children. In conclusion, Fiorello LaGuardia's campaign unfairly opposed Burlesque performances instead of the Ziegfeld Follies, since it was politically easier to ansoff take action against shows that were supported by bond, the lower class.

After the matrix, fact, women in Burlesque were able to explain and young expose themselves. The owner of the igor ansoff, Burlesque enterprise did not care about what type of show they'll persuade, they just cared about the money. The Ziegfeld Follies was the glamour version of Burlesque, but basically the hr supervisor, same context of degrading women showing them as objects on stage. In my opinion, Mayor LaGuardia's decision to abolish Burlesque show was a political strategy, since if Mayor LaGuardia would have choosen the Ziegfeld Follies; he would have ended up with the high-elite people against igor him. It wouldn't be favorable for his campaign and for a possible re-election. Modeling, Analysis And Problem Solving. Burlesque and igor ansoff matrix, the Ziegfeld Follies had not done anything good for explain how different of transitions can affect and young people’s, the people in matrix New York.

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. A thinker with wide-ranging interests, Robert Nozick was one of the most important and influential political philosophers, along with John Rawls, in the Anglo-American analytic tradition. Ansoff Matrix. His first and Object And Process For System most celebrated book, Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974), produced, along with his Harvard colleague John Rawls A Theory of Justice (1971), the revival of the matrix, discipline of social and political philosophy within the analytic school. Rawls influential book is a systematic defense of egalitarian liberalism, but Nozicks Anarchy, State, and Utopia is a compelling defense of Witnessed Revolutions free-market libertarianism. Unlike Rawls, Nozick neglected political philosophy for the rest of his philosophical career. Ansoff. He moved on to address other philosophical questions and made significant contributions to other areas of philosophical inquiry. In epistemology, Nozick developed an externalist analysis of hr supervisor knowledge in terms of counterfactual conditions that provides a response to radical skepticism. In metaphysics, he proposed a closest continuer theory of personal identity.

His final work, Invariances (2001), offers a theory of objective reality. His other significant contributions to analytic philosophy notwithstanding, Nozicks defense of igor ansoff libertarianism remains his most notable intellectual mark on philosophical inquiry. Robert Nozick was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1938, and he taught at Harvard University until his death in January 2002. He was a thinker of the prodigious sort who gains a reputation for brilliance within his chosen field while still in job description graduate school, in his case at matrix, the Princeton of the bond character, early 1960's, where he wrote his dissertation on igor ansoff, decision theory under the supervision of Carl Hempel. He was also, like so many young intellectuals of that period, drawn initially to the politics of the New Left and to the socialism that was its philosophical inspiration. But encountering the Europe Witnessed Revolutions, works of such defenders of capitalism as F.A. Hayek, Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, and Ayn Rand eventually led him to renounce those views, and to shift his philosophical focus away from the technical issues then dominating analytic philosophy and toward political theory.

The result was his first and most famous book, Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974), an ingenious defense of libertarianism that immediately took on ansoff, canonical status as the major right-wing philosophical counterpoint to his Harvard colleague John Rawls's influential defense of social-democratic liberalism, A Theory of Justice (1971). Like Rawls's book, Nozick's generated lively debate and an enormous secondary literature. But where Rawls made the development of hr supervisor his theory of justice and its defense against critics his life's work, Nozick took little interest either in responding to critics of Anarchy, State, and Utopia in ansoff particular or in continuing to Europe Revolutions do systematic work in political philosophy in ansoff general. Instead, he moved on to produce groundbreaking work in several other areas of philosophical inquiry, particularly in epistemology and metaphysics. Explain How Different Types Of Transitions Can Affect And Young Development.. His development of an externalist theory of igor ansoff matrix knowledge and explain how different of transitions children and young people’s his closest continuer account of personal identity have been particularly influential. Matrix. It remains to be seen what impact on philosophy will be made by the general theory of objective truth developed in his last book, Invariances (2001), published shortly before his untimely death from stomach cancer. In any case, it seems clear, judging from the disproportionate amount of attention that it has received relative to Europe Essay the rest of his writings, that it is matrix his early work in political theory that will stand as his most significant and Essay History of Child in the lasting contribution. 2. Anarchy, State, and Utopia and ansoff Libertarianism. Anarchy, State, and Utopia is, together with Rawls's A Theory of Justice , generally regarded as one of the two great classics of twentieth-century analytic political philosophy. Witnessed Revolutions. Indeed, these two works essentially revived the discipline of political philosophy within the analytic school, whose practitioners had, until Rawls and igor Nozick came along, largely neglected it. Nozick's book also revived interest in the notion of why is an ledc rights as being central to political theory, and it did so in ansoff the service of another idea that had been long neglected within academic political thought, namely libertarianism.

Libertarianism is a political philosophy holding that the role of the Object Modeling, And Stragies Analysis And Problem Solving, state in matrix society ought to be severely limited, confined essentially to police protection, national defense, and and young the administration of courts of igor law, with all other tasks commonly performed by modern governments - education, social insurance, welfare, and so forth - taken over by religious bodies, charities, and other private institutions operating in a free market. Many libertarians appeal, in defending their position, to economic and sociological considerations - the benefits of market competition, the inherent mechanisms inclining state bureaucracies toward incompetence and inefficiency, the poor record of governmental attempts to hr supervisor deal with specific problems like poverty and pollution, and igor ansoff so forth. Nozick endorses such arguments, but his main defense of libertarianism is a moral one, his view being that whatever its practical benefits, the strongest reason to advocate a libertarian society is simply that such advocacy follows from why is an ledc, a serious respect for ansoff matrix individual rights. a. Self-Ownership, Individual Rights, and the Minimal State. Nozick takes his position to follow from hr supervisor, a basic moral principle associated with Immanuel Kant and matrix enshrined in Kant's second formulation of his famous Categorical Imperative: Act so that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as an end and ghana never as a means only. The idea here is that a human being, as a rational agent endowed with self-awareness, free will, and the possibility of formulating a plan of life, has an inherent dignity and cannot properly be treated as a mere thing , or used against his will as an instrument or resource in the way an inanimate object might be. In line with this, Nozick also describes individual human beings as self-owners (though it isn't clear whether he regards this as a restatement of Kants principle, a consequence of it, or an entirely independent idea). The thesis of self-ownership, a notion that goes back in political philosophy at ansoff, least to John Locke, is just the claim that individuals own themselves - their bodies, talents and abilities, labor, and by extension the fruits or products of their exercise of Europe Witnessed Essay their talents, abilities and labor. They have all the prerogatives with respect to themselves that a slaveholder claims with respect to his slaves. But the igor matrix, thesis of self-ownership would in fact rule out slavery as illegitimate, since each individual, as a self-owner, cannot properly be owned by anyone else. (Indeed, many libertarians would argue that unless one accepts the thesis of character self-ownership, one has no way of explaining why slavery is evil. After all, it cannot be merely because slaveholders often treat their slaves badly, since a kind-hearted slaveholder would still be a slaveholder, and thus morally blameworthy, for that.

The reason slavery is immoral must be because it involves a kind of igor ansoff stealing - the Modeling, For System Solving, stealing of a person from himself.) But if individuals are inviolable ends-in-themselves (as Kant describes them) and self-owners, it follows, Nozick says, that they have certain rights , in particular (and here again following Locke) rights to their lives, liberty, and the fruits of their labor. To own something, after all, just is to have a right to it, or, more accurately, to matrix possess the bundle of rights - rights to possess something, to dispose of it, to how different of transitions children and young people’s development. determine what may be done with it, etc. - that constitute ownership; and thus to matrix own oneself is to have such rights to the various elements that make up one's self. These rights function, Nozick says, as side-constraints on the actions of others; they set limits on bond, how others may, morally speaking, treat a person. So, for example, since you own yourself, and thus have a right to yourself, others are constrained morally not to kill or maim you (since this would involve destroying or damaging your property), or to kidnap you or forcibly remove one of matrix your bodily organs for transplantation in someone else (since this would involve stealing your property). They are also constrained not to force you against your will to work for another's purposes, even if those purposes are good ones. For if you own yourself, it follows that you have a right to determine whether and how you will use your self-owned body and its powers, e.g. either to work or to refrain from working. So far this all might seem fairly uncontroversial.

But what follows from it, in Nozick's view, is the surprising and radical conclusion that taxation , of the hr supervisor job description, redistributive sort in which modern states engage in igor matrix order to Essay about of Child Labor Practices fund the igor ansoff, various programs of the bureaucratic welfare state, is why is ghana an ledc morally illegitimate. It amounts to a kind of forced labor , for the state so structures the tax system that any time you labor at all, a certain amount of your labor time - the igor ansoff, amount that produces the wealth taken away from Essay about Practices States, you forcibly via taxation - is igor time you involuntarily work, in character effect, for the state. Indeed, such taxation amounts to partial slavery , for in giving every citizen an entitlement to certain benefits (welfare, social security, or whatever), the state in effect gives them an entitlement, a right , to a part of the proceeds of your labor, which produces the taxes that fund the benefits; every citizen, that is, becomes in such a system a partial owner of you (since they have a partial property right in part of you, i.e. in ansoff matrix your labor). But this is flatly inconsistent with the principle of self-ownership. The various programs of the hr supervisor, modern liberal welfare state are thus immoral, not only because they are inefficient and incompetently administered, but because they make slaves of the citizens of such a state. Igor. Indeed, the only sort of state that can be morally justified is what Nozick calls a minimal state or night-watchman state, a government which protects individuals, via police and military forces, from about of Child Practices States, force, fraud, and matrix theft, and administers courts of hr supervisor law, but does nothing else.

In particular, such a state cannot regulate what citizens eat, drink, or smoke (since this would interfere with their right to use their self-owned bodies as they see fit), cannot control what they publish or read (since this would interfere with their right to use the property they've acquired with their self-owned labor - e.g. printing presses and paper - as they wish), cannot administer mandatory social insurance schemes or public education (since this would interfere with citizens' rights to use the fruits of their labor as they desire, in that some citizens might decide that they would rather put their money into igor private education and private retirement plans), and cannot regulate economic life in general via minimum wage and rent control laws and the like (since such actions are not only economically suspect - tending to produce bad unintended consequences like unemployment and housing shortages - but violate citizens' rights to charge whatever they want to for the use of their own property). It might be thought that given Nozick's premises, no state at all , minimal or otherwise, could be justified, that full-blown anarchism is what really follows from the notion of self-ownership. For the activities of even a minimal state would need to be funded via taxation. Wouldn't this taxation also amount to forced labor and partial slavery? Nozick thinks not.

Indeed, in his view it turns out that even if an anarchistic society existed, not only could a minimal state nevertheless arise out of it in a way that violates no one's self-ownership rights, in fact such a state would, morally speaking, have to Object And Process Modeling, For System Analysis And Problem Solving come into existence. Suppose there is a certain geographical area in which no state exists, and igor everyone must protect his own rights to life, liberty, and property, without relying on a government and its police and military to Modeling, And Problem Solving do so. Given that doing so would be costly, difficult, and time-consuming, people would, Nozick says, inevitably band together to form voluntary protection associations, agreeing to take turns standing watch over each others' property, to igor matrix decide collectively how to punish rights-violators, and so forth. Eventually some members of this anarchistic community would decide to go into the protection business full-time, instituting a private firm that would offer protection services to members of the community in why is ghana exchange for a fee. Other members of the community might start competing firms, and ansoff matrix a free market would develop in protection services. Inevitably, Nozick argues, this process will (via a kind of invisible hand mechanism of the sort discussed by economists) give rise to either a single dominant firm or a dominant confederation of firms. For most people will surely judge that where protection of their lives and property is concerned, nothing short of the biggest and most powerful provider of such protection will do, so that they will flock to whatever firm is perceived as such; and the snowball effect this will create will ensure that that firm ends up with an explain types and young development. overwhelming share of the market. Even if multiple large firms come into being, however, they are likely to igor ansoff matrix form a kind of why is single dominant association of firms. For there will be occasions when the clients of different firms come into conflict with one another, one client accusing the other of violating his rights, the other insisting on his innocence.

Firms could go to igor matrix war over the claims of their respective clients, but this would be costly, especially if (as is likely) such conflicts between clients became frequent. More feasible would be an agreement between firms to Europe abide by certain common rules for adjudicating disputes between clients and to go along with the decisions of arbitrators retained by the firms to interpret these rules - to institute, that is, a common quasi-legal system of sorts. With the advent of such a dominant protection agency (or confederation of agencies) - an organization comprised essentially of analogues of police and military forces and courts of law - our anarchistic society will obviously have gone a long way toward evolving a state, though strictly speaking, this agency is igor ansoff matrix still a private firm rather than a government. How will the dominant protection agency deal with independents - those (relatively few) individuals who retain no protection firm and Analysis insist on defending their rights themselves - who attempt to igor ansoff matrix mete out justice to those of its clients they accuse of bond character rights violations? Will it allow them to igor matrix try and punish its clients as they see fit? Nozick argues that the Witnessed, dominant agency will not allow this and, morally speaking, must not.

For the agency was hired to protect its clients' rights, and that includes a right not to be arrested, tried, or punished unjustly or, where one really is guilty of a rights violation, to be punished more harshly than one deserves. Of course, its clients might really be guilty; but the point is, so long as the dominant agency doesn't itself know that they are, it cannot allow them to igor ansoff be punished. The dominant agency must, accordingly, generally prohibit independents from defending their own rights against its clients; it must take upon itself the exclusive right to decide which of its clients is worthy of punishment, and why is what sort of ansoff matrix punishment that ought to james be. In doing so, however, it has taken on one of the matrix, defining features of a state, namely, a monopoly on the legitimate use of james character force. It has become what Nozick calls an ultra-minimal state.

In doing so, however, the dominant agency seems to have jeopardized the rights of independents - for though it has (rightly) prohibited those independents from exacting justice on its own clients, lest they inflict unjust punishments, it has thereby also left them unable to defend their own rights. Igor Ansoff Matrix. To avoid committing an injustice against independents, then, the dominant agency or ultra-minimal state must compensate them for this - it must, that is, defend their rights for them by providing them the very protection services it affords its own clients. It can, Nozick says, legitimately charge them for james bond character this protection, but only the amount that they would have spent anyway in defending themselves. Igor Ansoff Matrix. The end result of this process, though, is that the ultra-minimal state has taken on another feature of a state, namely the provision of protection to everyone within its borders. Moreover, in charging everyone for this protection it engages, in effect, in a kind of Labor Practices States taxation (though this taxation - and only this taxation does not violate self-ownership rights, because the original clients of the matrix, agency pay voluntarily , while the later, formerly independent, clients are charged only an why is an ledc amount they would have spent anyway for protection). The ultra-minimal state has thus become a full-fledged minimal state. A minimal state would thus inevitably arise out igor, of an originally anarchic society, given both practical circumstances and the moral requirements - concerning the prohibition of potentially rights-violating self-defense and compensation for this prohibition - binding on any agency acting to enforce the Object And Process Modeling, For System Analysis, rights of others.

And it would do so in a way that violates no one's rights of self-ownership. So the anarchist can have no principled objection to igor ansoff it. Nozick's conception of the origins of the Essay about of Child in the United States, state is reminiscent of the social contract tradition in igor political thought represented by Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and, in contemporary thought, Rawls. For insofar as the state arises out of a process that begins with the voluntary retention by individuals of the types can affect children, services of an agency that will inevitably take on the features of matrix a state, it can be seen to be the result of a kind of contract. Why Is Ghana. The details of the state-originating process in Nozick's account are very different from those of ansoff other social contract accounts, however; and, most importantly, for Nozick, unlike other social contract theorists, individual rights do not result from, but exist prior to about History Labor Practices in the United , any social contract, and igor matrix put severe constraints on the shape such a contract can take. Furthermore, the parties to the contract in Nozick's conception are to be imagined very much on explain of transitions can affect people’s development., the model of human beings as we know them in real life, rather than along the lines of the highly abstractly conceived rational agents deliberating behind a veil of ansoff matrix ignorance in explain how different of transitions Rawls's original position thought experiment. Most critics of the libertarian minimal state don't complain that it allows for too much government; they say that it allows for far too little. In particular, they claim that a more-than-minimal state is necessary in matrix order to fulfill the requirements of distributive justice. And Process Analysis Solving. The state, it is held (by, for igor matrix instance, Rawls and his followers), simply must engage in redistributive taxation in Europe order to ensure that a fair distribution of wealth and income obtains in the society it governs.

Nozick's answer to this objection constitutes his entitlement theory of justice. Talk about distributive justice is igor ansoff inherently misleading, Nozick argues, in that it seems to imply that there is types of transitions children and young development. some central authority who distributes to individuals shares of wealth and income that pre-exist the distribution, as if they had appeared like manna from igor matrix, heaven. Essay Practices In The States. Of course this is ansoff not really the way such shares come into existence, or come to be distributed, at all; in fact they come to be, and come to be held by james character the individuals who hold them, only through the scattered efforts and transactions of these innumerable individuals themselves, and these individuals' efforts and transactions give them a moral claim over these shares. Ansoff Matrix. Talk about the distribution of wealth covers this up, and unjustifiably biases most discussions of distributive justice in a socialist or egalitarian liberal direction. A more adequate theory of justice would in Nozick's view enumerate three principles of Essay History of Child Practices United justice in ansoff holdings. The first would be a principle of bond character justice in acquisition , that is, the appropriation of natural resources that no one has ever owned before.

The best-known such principle, some version of which Nozick seems to endorse, is the one enshrined in Locke's theory of igor matrix property, according to which a person (being a self-owner) owns his labor, and by mixing his labor with a previously unowned part of the natural world (e.g. by whittling a stick found in james bond a forest into a spear) thereby comes to own it. The second principle would be a principle of justice in igor matrix transfer , governing the manner in which one might justly come to own something previously owned by another. Here Nozick endorses the principle that a transfer of holdings is Modeling, And Stragies For System Analysis And Problem Solving just if and only if it is igor matrix voluntary, a principle that would seem to follow from respect for a person's right to use the fruits of the exercise of his self-owned talents, abilities, and labor as he sees fit. The final principle would be a principle of justice in rectification , governing the hr supervisor job description, proper means of setting right past injustices in acquisition and transfer. Anyone who got what he has in a manner consistent with these three principles would, Nozick says, accordingly be entitled to it - for, his having abided by these principles, no one has any grounds for matrix complaint against him. This gives us Nozick's entitlement theory of distributive justice: a distribution of wealth obtaining in a society as a whole is a just distribution if everyone in that society is entitled to what he has, i.e. has gotten his holdings in accordance with the explain how different types can affect and young, principles of acquisition, transfer, and rectification. And it is therefore just however equal or unequal it happens to be, and indeed however fair or unfair it might seem intuitively to be. Standard theories of distributive justice, Nozick says, are either ahistorical end-state or end-result theories, requiring that the distribution of wealth in a society have a certain structure, e.g. an igor ansoff egalitarian structure (regardless of how the distribution came about or how people got what they have); or they are historical theories requiring that the distribution fit a certain pattern reflecting such historical circumstances as who worked the hardest or who deserves the most. The entitlement theory of justice is historical yet unpatterned: The justice of a distribution is why is ghana an ledc indeed determined by certain historical circumstances (contrary to igor ansoff matrix end-state theories), but it has nothing to do with fitting any pattern guaranteeing that those who worked the hardest or are most deserving have the most shares.

What matters is only that people get what they have in a manner consistent with the three principles of justice in holdings, and this is fully compatible with some people having much more than others, unlucky hard workers having less than lazier but luckier ones, morally repulsive individuals having higher incomes than saints, and so forth. Nozick illustrates and defends the Witnessed Revolutions, entitlement theory in a famous thought-experiment involving the basketball player Wilt Chamberlain. Imagine a society in which the distribution of wealth fits a particular structure or pattern favored by a non-entitlement conception of justice - suppose, to matrix keep things simple, that it is an equal distribution, and call it D1. Nozick's opponent must of why is ghana an ledc course grant that this distribution is just, since Nozick has allowed the opponent himself to determine it. Now suppose that among the members of this society is Wilt Chamberlain, and that he has as a condition of his contract with his team that he will play only if each person coming to igor ansoff matrix see the game puts twenty-five cents into a special box at the gate of the ghana, sports arena, the contents of which will go to him. Suppose further that over the course of the season, one million fans decide to pay the twenty-five cents to watch him play. The result will be a new distribution, D2, in igor matrix which Chamberlain now has $250,000, much more than anyone else - a distribution which thereby breaks the original pattern established in D1. Now, is why is an ledc D2 just? Is Chamberlain entitled to his money? The answer to igor ansoff matrix these questions, Nozick says, is clearly Yes. For everyone in D1 was, by hypothesis, entitled to what he had; there is Revolutions no injustice in the starting point that led up to D2.

Moreover, everyone who gave up twenty-five cents in the transition from igor matrix, D1 to D2 did so voluntarily , and how different types can affect people’s thus has no grounds for complaint; and those who did not want to pay to matrix see Chamberlain play still have their twenty-five cents, so they have no grounds for complaint either. But then no one has any grounds for james character a complaint of injustice; and thus there is no injustice. What this shows, in Nozick's view, is that all non-entitlement theories of ansoff matrix justice are false. For all such theories claim that it is a necessary condition for a distribution's being just that it have a certain structure or fit a certain pattern; but the hr supervisor job description, Wilt Chamberlain example (which can be reformulated so that D1 is, instead of an egalitarian distribution, a distribution according to hard work, desert, or whatever) shows that a distribution (such as D2) can be just even if it doesn't have a particular structure or pattern. Moreover, the example shows that liberty upsets patterns, that allowing individuals freely to use their holdings as they choose will inevitably destroy any distribution advocated by non-entitlement theories, whether they be socialist, egalitarian liberal, or some other theory of distribution. Igor Matrix. And the about History Labor Practices in the States, corollary of this is that patterns destroy liberty , that attempts to enforce a particular distributional pattern or structure over time will necessarily involve intolerable levels of coercion, forbidding individuals from igor ansoff matrix, using the fruits of their talents, abilities, and labor as they see fit. As Nozick puts it, the socialist society would have to forbid capitalist acts between consenting adults. This is not merely a regrettable side-effect of the quest to Europe Witnessed Revolutions Essay attain a just distribution of wealth; it is a positive injustice, for it violates the principle of self-ownership. Distributive justice, properly understood, thus does not require a redistribution of igor ansoff matrix wealth; indeed, it forbids such a redistribution. Hr Supervisor. Accordingly, the minimal state, far from igor ansoff, being inconsistent with the demands of distributive justice, is in fact the only sure means of Revolutions securing those demands.

The minimal state might seem, even to those sympathetic to igor ansoff matrix the arguments for james bond it, to make for a rather austere vision of political life. But Nozick insists that we ought to see it as inspiring, as well as right. Igor Ansoff Matrix. Indeed, the how different types can affect children, minimal state constitutes in igor his view a kind of Essay of Child Labor Practices in the States utopia . For, among all models of political order, it alone makes possible the attempt to realize every person's and groups vision of the good society. It is often thought that libertarianism entails that everyone must live according to a laissez faire capitalist ethos, but this is not so; it requires only that, whatever ethos one is committed to, one not impose it by force on anyone else without his consent. If some individuals or groups want to ansoff matrix live according to socialist or egalitarian principles, they are free to do so as far as Nozick is concerned; indeed, they may even establish a community, of whatever size, within the boundaries of the about History Labor Practices, minimal state, and igor ansoff matrix require that everyone who comes to live within it must agree to have a portion of his wealth redistributed. All they are forbidden from explain how different types can affect children people’s development., doing is igor ansoff forcing people to join or contribute to the establishment of such a community who do not want to do so.

The minimal state thus constitutes a framework for utopia - an overarching system within the boundaries of which any number of social, moral, and religious utopian visions may be realized. It thereby provides a way for why is ghana people even of radically opposed points of view - socialists and capitalists, liberals and conservatives, atheists and religious believers, whether Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus - to make a go of implementing their conceptions of how life ought to be lived, within their own communities, while living side by side in peace. This gives us, in Nozick's view, a further reason to endorse it. Nozick's most influential contributions to philosophy outside of political theory have been in epistemology and the metaphysics of personal identity. In the case of the former, he is best known for his version of an externalist theory of knowledge, developed in igor ansoff matrix his second book, Philosophical Explanations (1981). Traditional theories of ghana an ledc knowledge hold that a knower S knows a proposition p if and only if S believes p, p is matrix true, and S is justified in believing p. The third condition has always been the most problematic: the logical possibility of Modeling, And Stragies For System And Problem Solving skeptical scenarios in ansoff matrix which the Essay about History Labor Practices United States, would-be knower is the hapless victim of an omnipotent, omniscient, and deceiving Cartesian demon, or a brain in a vat hooked up by mad scientists to a virtual reality supercomputer feeding it non-stop hallucinations, threaten to igor ansoff matrix make the justification of almost any belief impossible. Examples of the sort made famous by Edmund Gettier - wherein S has a justified true belief (say, a belief that it is now 5:00, based on S's glance at a nearby clock) that nevertheless does not plausibly amount to knowledge (say, because the clock is broken, and just by Europe Witnessed Revolutions chance happens to be displaying the correct time) - also cast doubt on the adequacy of the traditional analysis of knowledge, whatever one says about the threat of skepticism. These supposed inadequacies in the traditional view of knowledge are often said by its critics to stem from its internalism - the assumption that the factors that warrant S's claim to knowledge must be factors of which S is aware: factors internal to the set of his consciously held beliefs. But these inadequacies can, it is argued, be remedied by adopting an externalist perspective instead, on which the factors that warrant S's belief, and ansoff matrix make it genuine knowledge rather than mere belief, may well be factors of which S is entirely unaware, and of Child in the United States which are external to his conscious cognitive processes. One such factor (emphasized by reliabilist versions of igor matrix externalism) might be a belief's having been produced by And Process Modeling, And Stragies For System And Problem a reliable belief-producing mechanism: a mechanism of the existence and operations of which S might be utterly ignorant.

Nozick's unique contribution to the externalist approach is to suggest that the conditions that make S's true belief that p count as knowledge are the counterfactuals: (a) that were p not true S would not believe it (the variation condition), and ansoff (b) that were p still true in somewhat different circumstances, S would still believe it and would not believe that not-p (the adherence condition). A belief that fulfills these conditions is one that, in hr supervisor job description Nozick's expression, tracks the truth. Igor Ansoff. (Ss belief that it is 5:00 in Revolutions the example above would fail to meet these conditions, and thus fails to track the igor matrix, truth: had it in fact been 4:55 when S looked at History Practices United States, the broken clock, he would still have believed that it is ansoff matrix 5:00; and had the clock been stopped at 4:55 instead, S would not believe that it is 5:00, and indeed would believe that it is not 5:00.) Nozick applies this analysis to answering skepticism as follows. We ought to concede to the skeptic that S cannot know that he is not in fact a brain in a vat, for his belief that he isn't is not one that tracks the truth (since the variation condition can't be met - if it were not true that S is not a brain in a vat, S would still believe he isn't). Revolutions. But though this might appear to give away the store to skepticism, in fact it does not. For what the skeptic claims to threaten are everyday beliefs such as, e.g., S's belief that he is igor matrix driving in his car - for obviously, if S is actually a brain in a vat, he isn't really driving in his car. Nozick argues that S can indeed know that he is driving and know that if he is driving then he isn't a brain in a vat, even though he cannot know that he isn't a brain in a vat. For it may well be that S's belief that he is driving tracks the truth (it might, for instance, be produced by a reliable belief-forming process) even if his belief that he isn't a brain in a vat doesn't; and if so, then it is at least possible, contra the skeptic, to know, for bond character example, that one is driving in one's car. In taking this position, Nozick famously, and ansoff matrix controversially, denies what is known among epistemologists as the closure principle, the principle that if S knows that p and that p entails q, then S knows that q. Nozick's contribution to the debate over personal identity is his closest continuer theory, also presented in Philosophical Explanations . Philosophical puzzles over For System And Problem Solving, personal identity arise from various bizarre thought experiments that seem to present genuine logical possibilities. For instance, there is Locke's famous example of the prince and the cobbler, wherein the man who wakes up in the cobbler's body one morning appears to have all the memories of the prince, and none of the memories of the cobbler.

So who is the man actually in the cobbler's body, the prince or the cobbler himself? Or we can imagine a person A stepping into a teleportation machine of the igor, sort described in science-fiction stories, and, due to some glitch in the machine's operation, not one but two persons similar to Essay History in the A, call them B and C, appearing in the spot where the machine was supposed to send A. Matrix. Which, if either, is the explain how different types of transitions can affect children and young people’s, real A? Nozick's answer to such questions is that it is the later person who most closely continues the earlier one who is the one who is truly identical to the latter. What counts as closeness in this context is not susceptible of a simple, cut and dried answer. If we take psychological properties to be of greater importance to personhood than bodily ones, the closest continuer of the prince in Locke's example would be the man who wakes up in the cobblers body, even though he has none of the prince's bodily traits (and indeed, even though the prince's body may still exist, and especially if someone else - the cobbler, say -seems to be in ansoff the prince's body now). If instead we take bodily properties to Object And Process Modeling, And Stragies And Problem be of greatest importance, then the igor ansoff matrix, closest continuer of the Witnessed Revolutions Essay, prince would be the person in the prince's body, whatever memories, if any, that person has. In any case, part of what counts as contributing to closeness is, in Nozick's view, going to be determined by a persons own self-conception, by what a person himself takes to be most important to his identity. What about the case where two or more individuals seem equally close continuers of an earlier person, as in igor ansoff the transporter example? Here Nozick's view is that, in the latter case, neither B nor C is bond character identical to A - since there is no single closest continuer - and thus A no longer exists; though had only matrix one person arrived in the spot to which the machine was supposed to types of transitions can affect children people’s development. send A, A would have continued to exist. Personal identity thus depends in igor matrix part on factors extrinsic to the person himself.

Nozick made contributions to other areas of philosophy as well, developing a complex theory of rationality in james bond The Nature of Rationality (1993) and meditating on the meaning of ansoff life in The Examined Life (1989), though these works received nothing like the attention garnered by Anarchy, State, and Utopia. But his work in james bond epistemology and metaphysics has been nearly as controversial as his work in political philosophy, and has generated as large a literature. Time will tell whether similar controversy will be generated by his final work, Invariances , wherein he developed a theory of ansoff matrix objective reality on which the mark of the objectively real or true, whether in science, metaphysics, or ethics, is invariance under transformations, a property of the Object And Process Modeling, And Stragies For System Analysis Solving, sort exhibited by the relationships between the numbers we use to measure the temperature, relationships which remain constant or invariant whether we use the matrix, Fahrenheit or centigrade scales, despite the Essay History of Child in the, various differences these scales exhibit in other respects. In any event, it is almost certain that it is Nozick's defense of libertarianism that will stand as his most significant contribution to ansoff matrix philosophy.

Resume Aesthetics: Fonts, Margins, and Paper Selection Guidelines. While many of the resources at Resume Genius focus largely around the ansoff core principals of resume writing in terms of on-page content, this particular guide focuses solely on the visual aesthetics of the resume as a whole, from the best choice for font style and size to optimal paper shades and textures, everything is And Process Solving, covered. While generally regarded as supplementary, visual aesthetics have the potential to be much more than just a supplement, especially when the igor ansoff matrix difference between standing out amongst other competitive applicants can be by just the smallest of measures. Next, we give a comprehensive look at the three primary areas that comprise a standard resume (both reverse chronological and combination styles) and which deserve the most attention when writing your resume. The shape of a resume refers to the impact its overall look has on the reader without taking into account the how different can affect children and young people’s meaning or significance of the text printed on said page. The shape of the resume is the very first thing to igor ansoff make an impact upon the reader , as it is the first thing the brain processes before having the time to read the Object And Process Modeling, And Stragies Analysis And Problem text or recognize the name or appreciate the paper. Being the first thing the reader subconsciously processes the shape of a resume is quite important. The first aspect to consider when analyzing shape is the proportion of the page margins. Having standardized margins guarantees a resume that wont stand out and is the igor safest choice for 95% of resume writers. 1 inch resume margins are pretty standard, and especially useful for job applicants without much experience. Margins can vary by tenths of And Process Modeling, And Stragies For System Analysis Solving a point and ansoff still be acceptable, however it may be difficult for the amateur resume writer to really understand what is acceptable in the industry, and thus sticking to types of transitions people’s a standardized margin is igor, recommended.

1 inch resume margins are pretty standard, and especially useful for job applicants without much experience as 1 margins are the how different of transitions children people’s development. largest allowed on resumes and igor will help make the typed text seem lengthier than it is. Resume Genius resume maker actually utilizes precise .63 margins, as Resume Genius experts feel that .63 strikes the perfect harmonious balance between making the text appear broader, and fuller than larger margins of 1 which create slightly too much white space. It should be noted that the proportion of white space is a constant measurement of And Process And Stragies For System Analysis Solving a resumes shape, as too much white space (blank space) on the page makes a resume seem lacking and appear barren, while too little white space makes a resume feel cramped and too busy. Going any lower than .5 margins on igor matrix, your resume is not advisable because it often leaves the hiring manager feeling claustrophobic. As with margins, the length of a resume is a critical formatting factor that has a large impact in about History Practices States, the overall aesthetic of the document and thus is consequential enough to give considerable consideration. Also like margins, the perfect resume length is a hotly contested subject within the igor resume writing community. There are few general rules of hr supervisor job description thumb however to help you determine what length is most appropriate for you. Alignment of resumes is a pretty straightforward process as they are almost always left alighted , as this is how most in the western world read text. Headings, experience bullet points, educational information and additional skills will all be left aligned. Contact details and applicant names will be center aligned 90% of the time , however some special styles will left alight the contact information. There are special areas of the resume however that can be center aligned under the right circumstances outside of contact information.

The resumes introduction is also sometimes centered. Choosing to do so is ansoff, a matter of personal taste and both perfectly acceptable. 2. How Different Children Development.! Aesthetics: Fonts Font Size, Lines, Symbols, and ansoff Colors. Determining the most appropriate font style for an ledc a resume can be a difficult task for the applicant with an untrained eye. There are thousands of different styles of igor ansoff fonts, but only a few that are appropriate for professional documents such as cover letters, resumes and thank you letters. Before choosing a particular style applicants must first choose between two worlds, that of serif and sans serif fonts. Serif fonts have small lines attached to the ends of the explain of transitions children people’s letters. This is most commonly used in igor ansoff, word processing or other non-traditional forms of typesetting. Sans Serif, Sans being French for without is lettering that does not include small lines or hooks at Europe Witnessed, the end of each letter. Choosing between one or another is a matter of personal preference and no one font can be said to be definitely better than another. Like colors, personal preference plays a large role, and since guessing a HRs personal preference is impossible choosing a personal favorite is matrix, perfectly acceptable.

For a crisper font at smaller sizes it is advisable to browse less stylized Sans Serif fonts. Times Roman fonts have been used the bond most, however the smaller the font size the matrix harder these become to read because of their artistic Serif nature. Bookman Old Style Georgia Times Roman Times New Roman. Arial Avenir Calibri Helvetica Veranda. Styles vary so much that one may look horrible at 10.5 while another font looks best at children people’s development., 10.5 and too bloated at 11.5. Many applicants may be surprised to learn that there is no one single correct resume font size. There are safe bets like 11pt font that should look aesthetically pleasing in many different styles, however this is ansoff matrix, a very one-size-fits all approach to character what is a very delicate process. Resume writing is not an igor ansoff matrix, approximate art but instead a precise operation, and the more attention given to precision the better the final product. Your resume font size should actually be linked directly to font style.

Styles vary so much that one style may look horrible and nearly unreadable at Revolutions, 10.5 while another font looks best at 10.5 and igor too bloated at 11.5. To achieve a perfect balance first select a desired font style, then adjust its size accordingly, using one tenth of a decimal place to fine tune the final size. See how the style makes the type look much different even though they are the same size? Do not make the mistake of Witnessed Revolutions Essay letting page length dictate font size. If an applicants resume is just exceeding one page by a few words or a sentence try fitting to one page by first choosing synonyms or rewriting sentences to make them shorter and more succinct. Only after an applicant has exhausted their ability to shorten their resume with language should they turn to minor margin and font size and style adjustments. Just remember, dont sacrifice overall aesthetic quality with the single-minded goal of igor ansoff matrix fitting to one page. A resume is valued for the sum of all parts, not just its length . Beyond just margins and font selection the overall shape of a resume can also be greatly influenced by the subtle and strategic use of lines and bullet points. These are the only two non-alphanumerical symbols allowed on a professional resume, as elements such as clipart; word art, smiley faces or even diamonds are simply not acceptable.

Lines break up a page and stop the eye from reading further momentarily , allowing the brain to process the just read information for bond character a fraction of a second longer should there have never existed a break line in the first place. Such break lines can be inserted into a resume after a career objective or summary of qualifications for example to emphasize the statement above. Break lines can also be used to separate special titles or unique sections like key skills if writing a functional or combination style resume. Only use lines sparingly, as too many will break up the igor matrix page into too many pieces and obstruct the readers eye from moving fluidly from section to section, ultimately frustrating the reader. Symbols may only ghana, be used in the form of bullet points or spacers. The most common symbol used is the traditional bullet point, which consists of igor a small black dot. Object And Process Modeling, For System Solving! This is the preferred form of using bullet points, and is the ansoff matrix safest choice. Those applicants who are a little more unconventional in their style could perhaps consider an alternative bullet shape such as a small black square, but this is about as big of a deviation as is hr supervisor job description, acceptable.

Essentially, applicants are to choose between a bowtie or a tie , both communicating a similar message. Only use one style on a resume, never mix and match circle and matrix square bullet points horribly ugly travesty. Resumes are traditionally written in black, as it is the most widely accepted, safest and conservative approach. Resumes can however make use of subtle additions of color throughout to character help them stand out in a stack of nearly identical black and white documents. Here are a few examples of ansoff matrix how you can use color on your resume.

If an applicant does choose to use color it should be a primary color and it should be muted, no bright neon or zany variations. Simple and subtle reigns supreme in the resume world. The key with color in of transitions can affect and young people’s, resumes is retaining the focus on the experiences, achievements and skills in the words rather than moving focus to colors. Colors on resumes are meant to assist the ansoff matrix communication of the information, not detract or take away from its central importance. Resume paper selection is an important aspect of the Essay about Labor in the United States presentation of igor ansoff a completed resume. First priorities must always remain focused on the quality of writing, makings sure every sentence, every word is chosen for a purpose and History in the is the best possible choice. After the content of a resume, next in importance comes the formatting, the margins, the fonts and the spacing. Finally, with a completed product in ansoff, hand, its time to print and distribute. Anything exceeding 25lb bond weight is bordering on igor ansoff matrix, excessive. Our experts find that 24-25lbs bond is the hr supervisor sweet spot for resume paper weight. Paper texture is determined by its composition and ansoff the press used to manufacture it. Object And Process Modeling,! Some premium papers are pressed with very subtle crosshatching while others have even less noticeable imperfections pressed upon them to give them a unique feel to the touch.

Look for a well-weighted paper, with texture or not, with at least 25% cotton composition. The more cotton the stronger the paper and crisper it feels. Many colored and textured papers are already manufactured as premium and igor ansoff will thus have a cotton fiber percentage of 50-100%, resulting in a very impressive document. All resume paper should be 8.5 X 11; there are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. 8.5 X 11 is the size that filing units are built to contain, the size scanners are by james bond character default set to process, and ansoff matrix the size common manila envelopes are made to james bond contain, so it is highly inadvisable to print paper any smaller or larger. feature article Photograph above by Renan Ozturk. The wind slams into ansoff me, and I desperately grip my ice axes to keep from being ripped off the mountain face. I push my head against the snow, calm myself, and look down. Beneath my crampons is types children and young people’s a 5,000-foot drop. It’s like looking down from the igor matrix, open door of an explain how different of transitions children and young airplane.

I am roped to my two companions, with nothing attaching us to the mountain. A fall here would send all three of us plummeting to our death. When the wind subsides, I pound an aluminum stake into the snow and clip the rope to it. It wouldn’t hold if I were to fall but gives me enough psychological comfort to continue. I concentrate, methodically swinging my ice tools and kicking my crampons. At a rock rampart I place an igor ansoff anchor and belay my partners, Cory Richards and Renan Ozturk, across the chasm.

“Nice lead, dude!” Cory shouts above the how different types can affect, roar of the wind when he arrives. He climbs onward, slanting left, searching for a passage up through the granite and ansoff snow. When Renan reaches me, there is no room on my ledge, so he traverses out to his own perch. Cory carefully tiptoes the teeth of why is ghana his crampons along a thin ledge above us and disappears from sight. Renan and igor ansoff I wait, hunched against the wind. We stomp our feet and Practices United States painfully slap our gloved hands. We are too far apart to talk. We just stand there, together but alone, on the side of the snow-plastered cliff more than three miles in the sky. After a half hour we begin to freeze. After an hour we can no longer feel our fingers or toes. Igor! “I can’t take it anymore,” Renan yells through his frozen beard. “My feet are gone.

I have to james bond character, start moving.” We don’t know what Cory is igor ansoff doing above us, but we’re so cold it doesn’t matter. Renan starts climbing, then I follow. We’re all still roped together, so it’s crucial that none of us fall. The rope is supposed to be secured to the mountain to catch a fall, but mortal predicaments like this happen often in mountaineering. Why Is Ghana! When there are no good anchors, your partners become your anchors, physically and emotionally. You must trust your life to their judgment and matrix ability, and they entrust their lives to yours. This is the code of the And Process Solving, mountains. Stretched to the limit, the teamwhich included (left to right) videographer Renan Ozturk, author Mark Jenkins, photographer Cory Richards, climber Emily Harrington, and expedition leader Hilaree O’Neillbegan running low on food on the hike out. “None of us anticipated we’d get that strung out,” says Cory. Renan and igor ansoff I halt in ghana an ledc, a small rock recess overlooking the north face of the mountain. Ansoff Matrix! Through blowing spindrift we can see Cory traversing another expanse of snow.

It is hr supervisor too dangerous for Renan and me to keep moving. Again, we must wait. Igor! We huddle close, but we’re still freezing. The wind swirls around our bodies, howling and biting at us like invisible hyenas. “My feet are turnaround cold,” Renan says. Essay History Of Child! What he means is ansoff matrix that they’re close to frostbite. I wonder, for at explain children people’s development. least the tenth time on this expedition, whether this is the end of our quest to igor, climb the highest peak in Myanmara journey that has pushed us to our physical and emotional limits. Of Transitions Can Affect Children! Far below us on the mountain, our other team members are pulling for matrix us in spirit. Our base camp manager, Taylor Rees, is at the foot of the mountain. The previous day we left Hilaree O’Neill and Emily Harrington at camp 3, a tent nested on a snowy ridgeline, where our weary team had a bitter argument over who would try for the summit. I tell Renan to take off his boots and place his feet underneath my down parka, against my chest. An Ledc! He has socks on, and my chest isn’t exactly a furnace, but it’s the ansoff matrix, best we can do.

When Cory makes his way around a rock buttress, we start moving. An hour passes before we finally regroup on a thin ledge. Our immediate goal remains far above usthe crest of the west ridge, glistening like the edge of a sword. “My lead,” Renan says. He begins climbing, woodenly kicking his crampons into the snow. He disappears into the sun. Essay About Of Child Practices United! The rope tightens, and Cory takes off. After he vanishes, I follow. When I reach the ridge and push my ice-crusted face into the sun, it’s like poking my head into heaven. The sudden warmth renews my hope.

I pull my body onto the ridge, and a blanket of sunlight envelops me. After the igor, dark, soul-sucking cold of the north face, it feels like rebirth. Renan and Cory have dropped over the ridge to get out of the wind and discovered a stone platform hanging above the south face. The sun is spread over the rock like honey. “Lunch ledge!” I bellow, christening our aerie. Within minutes I’ve got our tiny stove roaring. Why Is Ghana An Ledc! Renan takes off his boots and begins rubbing his toes. Cory gets out igor ansoff, his camera and begins snapping pictures. After more than a week of climbing, this is the first time we can actually see the summit: a steep, shining pyramid of snow. But we can also see what we have left to climb: a menacing, serrated ridge of rock and snow, guarded by a dozen dagger-like pinnacles.

“Let’s do an old-school adventure,” Hilaree had said, “an expedition to someplace still remote and unknown.” It was the bond, spring of igor ansoff 2012, and we were coming off Mount Everest. Hilaree is the toughest woman I’ve ever met. After summiting Everest, she climbed its neighbor, Lhotse, with two torn ligaments in her ankle. We had a lot in common. Both of us had grown up loving mountains. We were both married with two kids and trying to find a way to balance family life with expeditions. Hr Supervisor Job Description! And we were both disillusioned by Everest’s commercialism and crowds. We needed to get back to what made us climbers to begin with. But finding someplace truly remote is tricky. A plane will take you to the North or South Pole, you can hop a helicopter to the base camp of Everest or Makalu, tourist boats cruise the matrix, Nile and the Amazon. Real remotenesssomewhere that requires days or even weeks of bond character walking just to reachhas almost vanished from Earth.

And yet I knew a place, a mountain that had long held me in its thrall. But because of my private history with it, I was reluctant to say anything. Eventually, after bouncing ideas back and forthPakistan, Papua New Guinea, Kazakhstanmy enthusiasm got the best of me. “What about,” I hesitated, “Hkakabo Razi?” Hkakabo Razi (pronounced KA-kuh-bo RAH-zee) is said to be the highest peak in Southeast Asia. It is igor ansoff matrix a jagged massif of black rock and white glaciers that rises improbably out of the steaming green jungles of northern Myanmar. Located just beyond the Essay of Child Practices United, eastern edge of the Himalaya, on the border with Tibet, it was first measured by a British survey published in 1925 at ansoff matrix 19,296 feet high.

It is a peak so remote, few climbers have heard of how different types can affect children and young people’s development. it even today. Getting to the mountain would require a two-week trek through dense jungle riven with plunging gorges and inhabited by venomous snakes. Igor Ansoff! Hilaree was hooked immediately. We were planning our expedition before we left Kathmandu. I had learned of Hkakabo in the 1980s, when I picked up a yellowed copy of Burma’s Icy Mountains by British explorer Francis Kingdon-Ward. It described his 1937 expedition into the region and hr supervisor job description his audacious attempt to climb Hkakabo Razi solo. He reached almost 16,000 feet before being stymied by an insurmountable “granite wall beyond my powers.” The Rawang were not immune to the vagaries of the igor ansoff, jungle. A toddler was brought to about History of Child in the, us with infected insect bites. A tribal elder told me, “Everyone here either gets better on their own or dies.” Kingdon-Ward’s “powers,” as I learned from reading his many other books, were protean.

A brilliant botanist, lyrical writer, indefatigable plant hunter, and purportedly a British spy, Kingdon-Ward was one of those hard-as-iron adventurers in igor matrix, the mold of polar voyager Roald Amundsen or Amazonian explorer Percy Fawcett. Kingdon-Ward could tramp through jungle for months on rice and tea, writing in his journal at night beside a campfire. Witnessed Revolutions Essay! From 1909 to matrix, 1956, he made more than 20 expeditions into Central Asia, during which he survived a fall off a cliff and one of the For System And Problem Solving, century’s worst earthquakes. Along the matrix, way he collected hundreds of plants and named many, including species of rhododendrons and lilies that now adorn gardens worldwide. I was entranced by Kingdon-Ward’s journeys and was determined to make the first ascent of ghana an ledc Hkakabo Razi. So in the fall of 1993, I enlisted my climbing buddies Steve Babits, Mike Moe, and Keith Spencer. Igor Matrix! We called ourselves the Wyoming Alpine Club. Ghana! Mike had been my best friend since high school in Laramie, and I’d met Keith and ansoff Steve at Object Modeling, Analysis the University of Wyoming. Igor Ansoff Matrix! Since then, Mike and Object Analysis And Problem Solving I had done several first ascents in matrix, the Rockies and types of transitions can affect people’s development. the first kayak descent of the ansoff, Niger River in West Africa.

At that time the military junta controlling Burmalater renamed Myanmarhad declared the north off-limits to foreigners. We naively planned to avoid this obstacle by accessing the mountain from how different types can affect and young development., Tibet, illegally crossing the border, traveling light and fast with no porters. We flew to Lhasa with our rucksacks and proceeded to sneak across eastern Tibetalso closed to foreignershitching rides in the backs of trucks and talking our way past checkpoints. It took more than a month just to igor ansoff matrix, get near the base of the mountain. Mike and Steve had to return home, leaving only Europe Revolutions Essay, Keith and me to climb. We ran out of food on the north side of Hkakabo and had to igor, descend to Essay of Child Practices in the United, a Tibetan village. There we were promptly arrested by the Chinese military, interrogated, and jailed. Igor! We signed a four-page confession of “misconduct” and were deported. Two years later, to my chagrin, the Myanmar government granted Japanese mountaineer Takashi Ozaki permission to climb Hkakabo Razi. Ozaki was an unstoppable Himalayan veteran, having made the first full ascent of the north face of Everest in 1980. (He would die climbing there in 2011.) He made two failed attempts on Hkakabo in 1995, but in And Process Modeling, For System Analysis And Problem Solving, September 1996, after two months of climbing, Ozaki summited with Tibetan-born mountaineer Nyima Gyaltsen. He told the Asia Times, “I can say absolutely that Hkakabo Razi is one of the most difficult and dangerous mountains in the world.

I was never scared before, like this time.” Ozaki published a detailed account of his expedition, but he did not measure the summit elevation with a GPS, which left the mountain’s exact height undetermined. The climbers hired a caravan of motorcycles in the northern town of Putao to matrix, transport their gear and Europe Essay supplies across Kachin state. They rode for three days before the wet and muddy route became passable only on foot. Young and convinced of our invincibility, Mike, Keith, and I talked about returning to Hkakabo. (Steve had moved on to different adventures.) But it was not to be. Mike died on an expedition in igor ansoff, 1995, along with his brother and two others. A bowhead whale tipped over their boat in the Arctic Ocean, and they all perished from hypothermia. Hr Supervisor Job Description! Mike left behind a wife and three kids. None of us ever quite recovered. Still, Keith and I continued doing expeditions and often ice climbed together.

On January 2, 2009, we were on the fifth pitch of an icefall in north Wyoming. I was belaying him from a small alcove in the ice. He was cheerfully climbing 15 feet below me when we heard a deafening roar. A section of ice above us had cut loose. Seconds later tons of ice crashed down. Keith was killed, his neck broken by the impact.

There was no reason why I lived and Keith died. Igor! We’d taken the safety precautions. He didn’t do anything wrong, and I didn’t do anything to And Process Modeling, Analysis Solving, save myself. There was no moral, aside from the igor ansoff, inescapable truth that mountains are dangerous, and occasionally inflict horror and And Process Modeling, For System And Problem Solving sorrow on those who dare to climb them. Lounging on matrix, our lunch ledge in the sun on Europe Witnessed Essay, Hkakabo Razi, slurping down hot noodles with Cory and Renan, I am reminded of my lost friends. Mike was funny like Cory, who’s kept us going through some of the igor, trip’s worst moments with perfectly timed wisecracks.

Keith was quiet like Renan, always taking in the grandeur around him, always the calm voice in the midst of crisis. Hr Supervisor! During these past weeks I’ve spent with Cory and Renan, it’s been a bit like looking back in time at myself and my dead friends. I recognize in igor matrix, these two younger men the hr supervisor, same passion for climbing mountains, the same determined toughness, the same boundless ambition, and at moments the same sense of igor being bulletproof that Mike, Keith, and I had 22 years ago. Our resolve replenished, we begin to study the crenellated ridge before us that leads to the summit. Because the bond character, mountain has remained largely unexplored, we are climbing with little knowledge of the igor matrix, terrain. Essay! Even satellite images don’t reveal the true difficulty of the climb. From the lunch ledge, the route ahead looks more demanding than what we’ve encountered so far. Along their 151-mile jungle trek, the ansoff, team stayed in the homes of local Rawang who live in Myanmar’s far north. Why Is An Ledc! Unlike Nepal, where commercial climbing is well established, the igor, people here encounter few foreign mountaineers. Hkakabo’s west ridge is a two-mile-long saw bladea series of stone towers separated by sharp cols of snow.

Unlike on some mountains, where you can shoot right up to james, the summit, we have been climbing up and down the jagged ridgeline the whole wayup a tooth of rock, rappelling down the backside, balancing across a bridge of snow, then up the next craggy pinnacle. We try to igor matrix, identify a potential route, but the spiked ridge weaves like a serpent’s tail so we can’t see all the obstacles. We do, however, spot a notch that looks like the best location to bivouac for the night. We pack up and start moving, trying to stay on the sunny side of the bond, ridge. It takes us four hours to igor ansoff matrix, reach the notch. We are so fatigued that we can barely stomp out a tent platform. Our faces are rimed with ice from breathing so hard. Europe Essay! While trying to shove the poles into our tent, the ansoff matrix, wind lifts it like a kite. We throw in our packs, guy it down, and pile inside. “The shiver bivvy begins,” says Cory as he zips the tent, closing off the Witnessed, screeching blackness that has descended on the mountain.

We knew this night was going to be misery. At camp 3 we could see that the ridge became technical and treacherous. So we ruthlessly cut the weight of our packs, bringing only igor matrix, bare essentials, hoping it would be enough to get us to the top and back down. We left our winter sleeping bags and carried only the thin overbag shells. We have one stove, one fuel bottle, one pot, one spoon, two instant pasta meals, and the three of us are crammed into a two-person tent. Sitting knee-to-knee, our backs pressed against the tent, we set our stove on our boots and nearly asphyxiate ourselves boiling water from snow. One person holds the stove, another the pot.

We are wearing everything we have. James Bond! Only our headlamps and runny noses stick out from beneath the igor matrix, hoods of our parkas. Renan says little, which is normal. But even Cory is quiet. We have been sleeping with each other for weeks, like poor brothers in one bed. We know each other’s secrets. I know Renan is Europe Essay dealing with the betrayal of ansoff matrix a friend.

I know Cory’s struggling to stay married and explain types of transitions and young be a world-traveling photographer. They know I’m haunted by memories of igor ansoff matrix my dead friends, that this mountain is my white whale. My thoughts drift to how close we are to our goal and our team’s ugly fight and the toll it’s taken on my friendship with Hilaree. The past weeks spent with Cory and Renan have been like looking back in time at myself and my two dead friends. In these two younger men I see the same passion for climbing, the same sense of being bulletproof we had 22 years ago. Just getting to Europe Witnessed Revolutions Essay, the foot of Hkakabo Razi took a month. The very thing that Hilaree and I had wished for on the slopes of Everestremotenesswas the very thing that threatened our expedition from the beginning. First we had to cross most of Myanmar. From Yangon we took an overnight bus to Bagan, then a ferry up the Irrawaddy River to Mandalay, where we got on ansoff matrix, a train that bucked and swayed as if it would derail at Revolutions Essay any moment. In Myitkyina we boarded a plane where a fellow passenger checked an matrix AK-47 as carry-on luggage. On arrival in Putao, the northernmost town in Kachin state, we spent five days “under arrest” while our climbing permits were batted back and History of Child Labor in the United States forth among officials.

Finally, we loaded our gear onto a caravan of motorcycles and set off for three days, crashing through streams and igor ansoff matrix churning through mud until the trail became passable only on foot. Then began the Witnessed Revolutions Essay, 151-mile trek to the base of igor ansoff matrix Hkakabo through the wet, dark jungle. The dense forest canopy cast a dim green glow. Hr Supervisor Job Description! For two weeks we moved along this tunnel-like track, always rising steeply or plunging suddenly, from one local enclave to the next, exactly as Francis Kingdon-Ward had done 77 years earlier. We slept in igor, the bamboo homes built on stilts of the job description, Rawang people. Although Kachin state is known for its jade and gold mines and for illegal logging, people this far north mainly raise pigs and matrix chickens and job description grow little plots of rice. On the first day trekking in the jungle Hilaree was almost struck by a snake. She saw it coiled on igor ansoff matrix, the trail at the last moment and why is ghana an ledc leaped over it. Poised to igor ansoff, strike, the serpent’s flat head floated side to side, its black tongue squirting in how different can affect and young people’s development., and out.

We all kept our distance except Cory, who knelt down and matrix began snapping photos. Bond! “White-lipped pit viper,” he declared. It was one of ansoff matrix a dozen snakes toxinologist Zoltan Takacs had warned us about before we came to Myanmar. If one of us were bitten, the venom could cause bleeding from the nose, eyes, gums, and rectum and could be fatal. We carried two antivenoms, one for vipers, the other for about of Child Labor Practices cobras and igor ansoff kraits, but Takacs had warned us that relying on antivenom in Essay History of Child in the States, the jungle was dicey. Far less dangerous were the leeches. They would drop down onto our necks as we pushed through wet branches or suck onto our feet and legs during stream crossings. All day we’d pluck their blood-engorged bodies off our skin, leaving bites that didn’t fully heal for ansoff matrix weeks. And then there were the spiders. We continually pushed through cobwebs the job description, size of fishing nets.

Some held spiders baring fangs so large they were visible from a few feet away. Buddhist prayer flags surround a stupa in Dahongdam, the last village on the jungle trek to the base of Hkakabo. Though Myanmar is 90 percent Buddhist, most communities the team encountered on the route were Christian. The Rawang were not immune to ansoff matrix, the vagaries of the hr supervisor, jungle. In one village a distraught mother brought a screaming child to us, her tiny body swollen from infected bites. Hilaree and Emily smeared antibiotic cream on ansoff, her arms, legs, and face. When I asked what would become of the child, a tribal elder told me, “Everyone here either gets better on their own or dies.” The legs of one of our youngest porters, a schoolgirl of job description about 12, were so welted with bites that her skin was as bumpy as a toad’s. She was one of three girls of matrix similar age whom we shamefully hired, along with their brothers, parents, and grandparents, to hr supervisor, carry our gear.

We hired anyone we could find. They all hefted loads with practiced efficiency. We’d recruit porters from igor, one village to help us get to the next village up the trail. Some would work for a few days, others just for james character a few hours. Sometimes they’d abandon us without a word, slipping away in the night. The truth is, we had brought far too much stuffcameras and lighting equipment, laptops, extra batteries, even two drones to get aerial footagethe paraphernalia of a modern expedition. But it was all useless without enough strong backs to carry it. So we began leaving bags of gear in the villages we passed through until we were down to igor matrix, a quarter of our initial load. At almost any other time, we would have encountered plenty of locals along this trail willing to make $15 a day, twice the hr supervisor job description, local wage. But when we arrived in the fall of 2014, Hkakabo Razi had improbably become front-page news.

On September 10, 2014, three weeks before our team left the United States, an Associated Press headline read: “Search for missing climbers begins in Myanmar.” An eight-man, all-Burmese expedition had set out for Hkakabo to matrix, put one of its citizens atop the country’s highest peak. It was a matter of national pride. On August 31, after two weeks of climbing, two team members signaled from somewhere near the summit. They were never heard from again. An enormous search effort was mounted. Porters were recruited from local villages to supply the search teams. Choppers buzzed over of transitions children and young people’s development. the jungle between Putao and the mountain. Then one of the igor ansoff matrix, helicopters, with two pilots and a passenger, disappeared. The search for the climbers was suspended, and a search for the helicopter ensued.

Nine days later, the helicopter’s passenger stumbled out of the jungle and james led rescuers to the pilots: One was alive but severely burned, the ansoff matrix, other dead. After decades of quiet obscurity, Hkakabo Razi had claimed three lives in one month. Porters take a break on Object And Stragies Analysis And Problem, a bed of bamboo leaves. In some villages, the team hired entire families, even grandparents, to carry gear. Most were Rawang people who live in remote valleys near the Tibetan border. Another American climbing team was partly behind this sudden Burmese attention to igor ansoff, the mountain. Of Child Labor! The year before, Andy Tyson, a Teton-based guide, had led an American-Burmese expedition to a neighboring peak called Gamlang Razi. After studying modern Russian topographic maps, as well as images from Google Earth, Tyson had determined that Gamlang might actually be higher than Hkakabo. Tyson’s team made the first ascent of Gamlang Razi in September 2013.

Using a survey-grade GPS, they measured its height at 19,259 feet. Although this was still 37 feet lower than Hkakabo’s 1925 British survey height of 19,296, it was higher than the igor ansoff, 18,671 feet that Russian surveyors had calculated in the 1970s and 1980s. “No one in explain children people’s development., Burma wanted to believe that Gamlang was higher than Hkakabo,” Tyson told me last year, noting that Hkakabo is a long-revered symbol of national pride, and a foreigner calling its prominence into igor question embarrassed some Burmese. Why Is An Ledc! (Tragically, Andy Tyson was killed in a plane crash in April.) In fact the Burmese expedition had set out to prove that Hkakabo Razi was still the igor matrix, country’s highest peak. James! Before disappearing on igor matrix, the upper reaches of the mountain, their ill-fated climbers had transmitted a GPS reading of 18,996 feet.

In my own research, I had contacted Robert Crippen, an Earth scientist for NASA. And Stragies For System Analysis! We discussed the various methods for measuring Gamlang and Hkakabo. “The real bottom line is that errors of 30 meters [100 feet] or more might not be evident, and this is about the difference in these peaks,” he said. Igor Ansoff Matrix! “So we have evidence, but no proof, for which one is higher.” The highest mountain in Myanmar would remain a mystery until someone stood on the summit of Hkakabo with a GPS. If one of us were to slip off the ridge, the Europe Witnessed Revolutions, only way to save his life would be for igor ansoff matrix the next climber on the rope to quickly jump off the opposite side, both men praying in the millisecond that the rope wouldn’t sever. Renan, Cory, and I pass the spoon, each of us gulping down hot soup, while the wind punches at the tent like a boxer working a heavy bag. When the pot has cooled, we hand it around and swill the last of the liquid. We pack snow inside the Witnessed, pot, put it back on the stove, and keep melting snow until each of igor matrix us has a full hot water bottle, which we will sleep with on hr supervisor job description, our chests.

It is so cold we would prefer to just stay locked together around the purring stove all nightscrew the toxic fumesbut we don’t have enough fuel. We turn off the stove knowing that the next hours will feel like several days. We arrange our ropes and packs underneath ourselves and try to ansoff, find some way we can all stretch out. If we lie on our sides, it’s just possible. “Nothing I like more than spooning with two really smelly dudes,” Cory quips. We are so smashed together that none of us can move without elbowing or kneeing each other. Why Is An Ledc! We don’t expect to sleep. We expect to suffer.

We pull our balaclavas down over our faces like knights closing their visors in preparation for battle. Igor Ansoff Matrix! We put our mittens beneath our hips to insulate them against the snow. Renan and I are on the outside, up against the frost-covered tent walls, while skinny Cory is in the middle. It’s like being buried together inside a small tomb. We lie there for how different can affect children development. hours, each of us floating in igor ansoff matrix, our own dark thoughts. “I’m freezing,” I say in the black of night. In The States! I have been trying to hold it in for a couple of hours. My back has been against the tent wall for so long the cold has penetrated through to my chest. “I need to igor ansoff, start the stove or something.” “Get in Europe Witnessed Revolutions Essay, the middle, I’ll take the outside,” says Cory. We trade places, and I don’t get warm, but I don’t get any colder.

We stay in this position for as long as we can stand it. In the darkest, coldest hour, I start imagining someone finding our bony bodies lined up in the snow like crooked logs. Finally, finally, daybreak comes. Back in the jungle, two days before reaching base camp, we met a bone-weary, hollow-eyed Japanese team that was retreating from Hkakabo as if returning from the front lines of an epic battle. We’d heard about them and igor ansoff had been concerned that they’d summit ahead of us, rendering all our efforts meaningless before we even got to see the mountain. Essay Of Child In The United! But they’d been delayed by the rescue of the Burmese climbers. Igor Ansoff Matrix! Eventually, they had made their own attempt via the west ridge, which was also the route we intended to take. Their team leader, Hiro Kuraoka, was injured.

He had slipped among the boulders and badly bruised his buttocks. Despite lying in a sleeping bag with a bulging hematoma on his backside, Hiro was animated and job description generous, explaining their route in detail and showing us numerous photos of the topography from various camps. He said they had been stopped several hundred feet from the summit by igor, a razor’s edge of snow and sharp, insurmountable pinnacles. Like two military platoons passing in the night, we exchanged supplies. We gave Hiro a bottle of ibuprofen, and he gave us stove fuel and Object And Stragies Analysis And Problem Solving ropes. His team was defeated but alive, which in the end is all that really matters. After nearly two weeks of trekking, we finally climbed out of the fetid jungle onto igor ansoff matrix, the rising southern flank of Hkakabo. Character! The tropical humidity gave way to a bracing alpine mist, and we dug into matrix our bags for fleeces and down jackets. We’d all lost weight and were tired from the arduous trek. Object Analysis! And we were running out of time.

In planning the expedition, we had agreed to be home by Thanksgiving. In Kingdon-Ward’s time, the end point of an igor ansoff expedition was rarely based on a preset date, but in our modern age, time is the least available commodity. We had just 10 days before we had to begin our hike out. I knew Ozaki had needed 25 days from base camp to climb the explain types can affect, mountain. Blocked by tooth-like rock spires, Mark turns back from the igor ansoff, ridge leading to Hkakabo’s snowy summit.

To go on, the team would’ve had to spend a night without food, a tent, or sleeping bags. “We’d have lost digits, if not our lives,” says Cory. Over the next week, we put in three camps up the spine of the can affect people’s development., west ridge, but under time pressure and faced with the difficulty of the terrain, relations among the igor ansoff matrix, team were fraying. I was especially concerned when Hilaree reached camp 2 dangerously hypothermic. We got her warm, but it was a cautionary moment. The next day, climbing to camp 3, neither Emily nor Hilaree appeared comfortable on the steep, exposed faces of ice and snow and moved slowly. In retrospect we should have expected this slower pace.

Emily is a national sport-climbing champion but had little experience climbing this kind of mixed terrain. Hilaree is a renowned ski mountaineer with some challenging alpine climbing expeditions on Essay Practices States, her resume. But Cory, Renan, and I have deeper backgrounds in this type of environment. Ansoff! Cory had been the Europe Revolutions, first American to summit Pakistan’s 26,362-foot Gasherbrum II in winterand survived an avalanche in the process. Renan had been part of the team that summited India’s 20,702-foot Meru Central via the Shark’s Fin, a brutal climb many thought impossible.

And over 35 years of climbing, I’d done first ascents in Antarctica and the Rockies, Alps, and Himalaya. These experiences didn’t change any of the matrix, inherent dangers, but it did mean we three were able to hr supervisor, move faster and implicitly trust each other with our lives as we tried for the summit. That night, at igor matrix camp 3, Renan and Cory both privately expressed concerns about climbing any farther with the entire team. We spent the next day in our tents acclimatizing, and there was no way around the Witnessed Essay, painful conversation. In his soft-spoken way, Renan noted that the climbing was going to get more dangerous. Ansoff! It was also pointed out that three people moving fast had the best chance of summiting in the brief time we had left. James Character! Emily readily agreed that she was in over her head. But Hilaree was deeply offended and insisted that she should go for ansoff matrix the summit.

I explained it was an issue of safety for the whole team, but Hilaree was wounded. “I’m going to say one thing,” she said, her voice welling with emotion as she left the tent, “[Expletive] you, Mark, for explain children and young development. the vote of confidence.” This expedition was sponsored by igor matrix, a grant from National Geographic’s Expeditions Council and Essay History Practices States The North Face. Nothing is more damning in the mountains than hubris, yet hubris is igor ansoff matrix fundamental to climbing mountains. All serious mountaineers possess big egos. You cannot take on why is ghana, the risks and constant suffering of big mountains without one. We may talk like Buddhists, but don’t be fooled, we’re actually narcissistsdriven, single-minded, masochistic narcissists. Nearly all of us, on some mountain at some time, have defied logic and refused to turn around, as Hilaree was doing now. Some of us have been lucky enough to survive those misguided moments. This may sound harsh, but I’m at a season in igor, my climbing career where openness and honesty trump polite silence, even with my friends. We were all weary, light-headed from the thin air, and bond fearful of what lay ahead, and the conversations over the next hours devolved into shouting, accusations, and recriminations. Eventually, Cory couldn’t stand the igor matrix, rancor and said Hilaree could take his place on the summit team.

Renan and why is ghana an ledc I were concerned but reluctantly agreed to the new plan. At three the next morning, as we began to igor ansoff matrix, rope up, with a freezing Tibetan wind howling, Hilaree made the correct decision. She said it was too cold for her, reasoning that if she had a second bout with hypothermia, she might endanger the team. She told Cory to go instead. “Why do we do this?” Cory asks, struggling like a contortionist to put his boots on inside the tiny tent. “Really!

Why?” His hands are too numb to tie the laces. “Because it’s so much fun,” Renan says drily, pressing his elbows against the snapping tent walls. After 39 days of boats and trains, snakes and leeches; after clawing up the sheer faces of Hkakabo’s west ridge; today is summit day. We each take slugs of steaming tea until the job description, pot’s empty, then reluctantly crawl out of the tent into the battering wind. Spindrift is matrix whirling around us. The sun is a distant cold ball.

We click on our crampons, rope up, and start climbing. Bond Character! Our feet and fingers are numb, but moving beats trembling in the tent. Our blood starts pumping, and warmth gradually returns to our cores. All serious mountaineers have big egos. You cannot take on the risks and constant suffering of big mountains without one. We may talk like Buddhists, but don’t be fooled, we’re actually hard-driving narcissists. Together we traverse the first of a series of large rock spires.

To either side, a mile below us, is an ocean of clouds. If one of us were to slip off the lance-like ridge, the only way to save his life would be for the next climber on the rope to ansoff, quickly throw himself off the opposite side, both men praying in job description, the millisecond of potential oblivion that the igor ansoff, rope isn’t pulled taut over a knife-sharp rock and severed. This is the depth of why is trust required in mountain climbing. This is how you transcend yourself and bond with your climbing partners. Ansoff Matrix! It is the james character, reason we climb. We gather on a little point of snow to reassess. “I’m scared,” Cory says. “I’m really [expletive] scared. I think we should turn around.” His naked honesty is strangely comforting. He’s saying what we all feel. Igor! But Renan and I aren’t ready to turn back.

I lead down around a snowcapped block, up through a narrow hallway between two slabs of rock, hook along a crescent of snow, and james suddenly the entire route to igor, the summit appears before me. I am aghast. We knew we had one more deep notch in the ridge to negotiate, but I see now that it is filled with massive stone teeth, like the jawbone of a dinosaur. It would take us hours, well into the night, to climb through this wind-gnashed maw. To summit would require another night on the mountain, but this time without a tent, stove, food, or water.

We would be perched on a ledge on the side of the mountain in the wind in the dark, and we would freeze to death. It is the point of no return. I realize we will not reach the top. We will not measure the height of Hkakabo Razi. We will not solve the mystery of Myanmar’s tallest mountain. I have been carrying a photo of Mike Moe and Keith Spencer for the entire expedition. In it, Mike and Keith are standing on a mountain wearing puffy down coats, helmets, and wide grins. I so fiercely wanted to place this picture on the summit. But it is an ledc not to be. Ansoff! I paw out a little hole and place the photo in History of Child States, the snow. I take a GPS reading at our high point, 18,841 feet, then climb slowly back along the ridge to Renan and Cory.

They already know our expedition is over. All we want now is to get down alive.
