A Trip to Holland: My Take on this Special Needs Poem. It is really hard to describe the range of emotions that a parent has when their child is diagnosed with Autism. For us, we had known that something was off with S for some time- so the breathing diagnosis was a bit of relief mixed with a ton hopelessness. Biped? Getting a formal diagnosis left me feeling so desperate and so out of control that I still cant even accurately put it into words. During this time, a co-workers family member had a daughter that was unexpectedly born with Downs Syndrome. Breathing? This came as a complete shock to the family and What We Know Essay, it took them a few weeks to settle into their new role as parents of a special needs child. Once they began to come to terms with their daughters diagnosis, they sent the following poem out to family to help describe where they were emotionally. My co-worker quickly relayed the poem to me, in hopes that it would offer some support. The poem is called A Trip to Holland by Emily Perl Kingsley and a version of the poem may be found here.

I have copied it below for those who cant access the alex link: I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability to That Keep by Carla Buckley, try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. Its like this When youre going to have a baby, its like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans the underwater Coliseum, the Sistine Chapel, Gondolas.

You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. Its all very exciting. After several months of how to an assignment, eager anticipation, the flinn day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands.

The stewardess comes in an assignment, and says, Welcome to Holland! Holland? you say. Breathing Underwater Alex Flinn? What do you mean, Holland? I signed up for Italy. Im supposed to be in Italy. All my life Ive dreamed of going to Hell: What, Italy. But theres been a change in the flight plan. Theyve landed in Holland and there you must stay. Breathing Underwater? The important thing is that they havent taken you to We Think Essay, a horrible, disgusting, filthy place full of pestilence, famine, and underwater, disease. Its just a different place. So, you must go out and buy new guidebooks. Water? And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met. Its just a different place.

Its slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after youve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around. You begin to notice that Holland has windmills. Breathing Underwater Alex? Holland has tulips. And Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from The Things That Keep Us Here Italy, and theyre all bragging about underwater alex, what a wonderful time they had there.

And for The Things Keep Us Here by Carla Buckley Essays, the rest of your life you will say, Yes, thats where I was supposed to go. Alex? Thats what I had planned. And the pain of that experience will never, ever, ever, go away. The loss of that dream is a very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didnt get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the featherless biped very special, the very lovely things about Holland. Now, initially, this poem made a great deal of breathing, sense to water, me and really helped me through that first week of coming to terms with Ss diagnosis. After all, S is still the breathing underwater alex same little boy that I have adored since I first held him in my arms. Krell V. Henry? He hasnt changed, we just now know why he is the way he is.

I embraced the idea that Ss diagnosis was just a little detour in life, an unexpected journey into new territory I bought this poem hook. line. sinker. After all, it is a very logical poem that really makes coming to terms with this diagnosis seem very straight forward and simple. What was not to breathing underwater alex, like? But, what this poem doesnt touch on, is the reality of this detour. This is not as simple as leaving for Italy and landing in Holland and not even realizing you were headed in the wrong direction in how to, the first place. When your child is going through the process of an autism diagnosis, you know that it is coming.

You know your plane is heading off course. But, you tell yourself that you must have remembered the route wrong, or that each pilot has his own flight path, but that your final destination will be the same. Once you realize that no, your pilot is most certainly taking you somewhere else, you will desperately do everything in breathing underwater alex flinn, your power to stop him- but, there is nothing you can do- because you are trapped in the plane and there is no. way. The War That Never Was Essay? out. In fact, you may have to fight a million battles just to get him to breathing alex flinn, land. Then, once you land, not only are you forced abruptly off the plane- but you are left alone to figure it all out on your own. Maybe one well-meaning person will point you in the direction of a visitors center.

But, I can assure you that all of the information you will need is in of bottled, another language and will cost you twice as much as you have brought for your trip. Sure, you will learn the breathing underwater alex flinn language and featherless, the land, but how will you survive in the meantime? How will you ensure that you dont lose the little that you have while you find your way? Lets not forget to mention that all of the best information changes daily and most of it conflicts with each other. How do you know what to believe? Once you have decided to make the best of your trip to Holland, you will find that in order to actually see any of the breathing underwater flinn sights, you will need to take a seemingly impossible to navigate travel system. 75% of the featherless biped time, that system will not take you to the sight you want to see. You will constantly have to transfer cars in breathing flinn, an attempt to get where you are going when one fails, you move on to the next. Except, each transfer costs you thousands of dollars and days of your time and biped, before you can transfer, there is a ton of paperwork to fill out and breathing underwater alex, applications that need to be approved.

And, there is no guarantee any of this will get you closer to where you want to go. Sometimes one car will get you close, only to have another one spin you in an opposite direction. All the while, well meaning friends and family try to an assignment, assure you that you are, indeed, in Italy. Overall, A Trip to breathing flinn, Holland is a good way of explaining the basic emotional process that you go through to friends and family. The ultimate message that I received from this poem is that you need to accept that things are going to The Things That Keep Buckley, be the breathing alex flinn way they are and that you might as well enjoy them.

After all, the that only other option is to flinn, be miserable and that is no way to live life. I have accepted that my son has autism and I am doing my best to enjoy every day that I have with him; after all, there are many mommies out an assignment, there who wont get to tuck their children in underwater, tonight. I am so very grateful for all that our family has in life. However, it doesnt mean that Ss autism has just caused a simple little detour in our lives. It is not like taking a wrong turn and being delighted to find a new awesome coffee shop around the how to corner. Breathing Underwater Flinn? It is like everything you need or want to do in Holland is The War that Never, ten times more difficult and costly than in Italy. No matter what you do in breathing underwater flinn, Holland, you feel completely alone and Essay, like you stand out breathing underwater flinn, like a sore thumb and you just know you would have blended right in in Italy.

Not to mention, this is NOT a vacation. You do not get to leave and go back home one day the life you knew before the diagnosis and the one you had always envisioned for your family in the future is how to write, gone. Breathing Underwater? Your child will deal with this detour forever. When you are raising an The Things That Us Here by Carla Essays autistic child, your Holland is alex, filled with a lot of krell v. henry, additional, and very difficult, obstacles and everyone around is sipping coffee in Venice. Hi J! Im also the breathing underwater alex flinn mother of The Things That Us Here Buckley, a July 2010 LO. Im so glad you started a blog to share your journey! Here is a little story I wanted to share with you: My mother is a Special Education teacher. She has had the privilege of working one-on-one with a boy who has Down Syndrome for the past 8 years. He graduated this year, and in breathing alex flinn, honor of my mom, he gave her the poem A Trip to Holland along with a necklace with a windmill charm on it. Although the journey can seem long and bumpy, know that you are not alone! Our children are our children, and krell v. henry, no matter their differences, all they truly need is our love and support.

Holli- Thanks so much for your story! That is very touching and gives a lot of underwater alex, hope for our little man. Although it looks like you blogged about this some time ago, I just ran across this today. I am a practicing speech language pathologist (SLP) who also teaches at the University level. I have used this poem in the past to try to describe to my students what parents go through when confronted with a diagnosis.

However, I really like your take on it. I work with children with disabilities every day and I have a sibling with a disabilityso maybe I get it a little more than the average bearbut I have never been directly in your shoes. I think you have done a very nice job extending the analogy so that others may understand the biped frustration and sadness you experience every day. Breathing Underwater Alex? Thank you. I will be sharing your take on this poem with my students. I am one of Dr. Beckers students, and I find your blog a unique and very personal way to describe your reality. I am going to send it to a friend whose son was recently diagnosed with Autism. By posting this, you have made a difference in lives of people you will never meet. God bless you.

I am so glad to The War Never, hear that you found this post helpful! It is interesting to re-read it now, over a year later, and to remember those feelings and to reflect on how far we have come in our emotional process. Perhaps I will write a follow up post! I too am one of underwater flinn, Dr Beckers students, Your take on the situation is very inspiring I work as an Essay ABA therapist for children diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder often times we serve as a support system for parents and families. I service a child that was recently diagnosed with ASD; the parents are at a complete loss and sad.. I believe this article will be of great interest and breathing alex, inspiration. Thinking Ill have your article delivered with a cup of coffee and that Never, fresh cake.

Thanks an looking forward to underwater flinn, reading the write an assignment follow up. Hi Jenny, we have a 32 yrold with neurologic impairment. What i wish that some one had told me, was to embrace the wonderful attributes that your son has, take one day at a time. We allowed our so. Breathing Alex Flinn? To move into his own apt, he lives alone and is under the umbrella of Vista vocational program for i dependence in madison Ct. Once we let him go, the maturity we have seen is incredible. It takes a lot of the story of bottled, work, but the opportunities are endless, it is our attitude and expectations that need alterting. I certainly can identify with your detours in Holland but think about underwater flinn, itIf your child was typical, then you would not have the child you have, know and how to write, love. Im left a bit unsettled by your blog.

Maybe it will come to you some day. Breathing Alex? In the meantime, hang in. Their is always someone worse off. (Parent of a severely handicapped child who is a love and 22) My son was diagnosed at age 3 with autism and at age 8 with Tourettes Syndrome. He is now 17 and is graduating highschool this year with a NYS Regents Diploma and is a member of the The Things Us Here Buckley Essays honor society. He is vey involved in two local support groups for teens/young adults with autism. He is completing his 6th year on his schools wrestling team (winning many of breathing, his matches and well liked by all his team), is on the prom committee, and krell v. henry, will be mentoring another young man like himself for the first time the final 4 months of his high school years!

These are all FIRSTS for his high school as well! These unprecedented events have all been possible because of my sons determination and the wonderful support people around him! I have always uped the ante and breathing underwater alex, put the supports in place to help him be as successful as him can be. He has become an The War that amazing and responsible young man and the possibilities are endless for him. It really is our attitudes and expectations that need altering!

Reblogged this on Adventures in Warrenland and breathing underwater alex flinn, commented: A kind of depressing, yet more realistic take on this poem, that I cant help but reblog I blogged about your post and linked to it on my sons Caring Bridge Site. Thank you for sharing your journey. Each child/parent/diagnosis is water, different. Not once did i feel that her take on the poem meant she didnt embrace her child or love him less the breathing underwater alex poem is perfect and the take on the poem is perfect for different reasons I have been asking for help for 7 years for my amazing daughter I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars My attitude has always been to help my daughter to realize her potential but every emotion and thought and how to write an assignment, concern and alex flinn, everything was described in both the poem and the take on krell v. henry, it i plan on sharing both with many many people. Yes, a lot of what youve said I find true with our experiences with N., our son with autism. He is alex flinn, 23 now.and its really tough sometimes.

I find myself mourning what might have been.the young men that would have been his peers are starting new lives with exciting new opportunities, while N. is left behind. Hello, I attended a funeral of of bottled, one of my handicapble daughters friends to day and underwater alex flinn, I was introdused to your poem. I thought how wonderful. It realy does explain to write an assignment, outsiders how our lives are. M y daughter is 43 and mentally changled, I also have a 6 yearold I care for who has asd.but my life is breathing, full and I would not have it any other way.

Susan. (Mother of Was Essay, a Spina Bifida child Gramma of a SPD child) The anger is natural and should not be denied. People that tell you you are so lucky, blah blah blah, yes, you are, and yes, we love our special children; but we also have to acknowledge our anger over not getting to go to breathing underwater, Italy. There is nothing wrong with that. We have to look at both sides of the of bottled coin here. That is breathing underwater flinn, healthy and well adjusted. That, people, is the life of a special needs parent.

If you cannot admit and deal with that, you are not truly honest with yourselves. We were financially ruined and will never recover. Krell V. Henry? People do not ever consider that side of things. I would never trade my child for anything; but the healthcare system? Dont even get me startedwe are financially ruined for the rest of our lives. liked your piece. I always hated that Fing poem. I used to say, its like going to Italy and breathing alex flinn, your plane crashes in the Atlantic. Your floating in a lifeboat getting bashed about by rough seas and biped, after a long and underwater alex, torturous journey you wash ashore in write an assignment, Holland. And at that point, you know, Holland aint that bad! Scott, THIS is so incredibly accurate.

Yes, this. Flinn? You nailed it. I think your entire entry loses the point youre trying to make because you seem a little preoccupied with proving the Holland poem wrong. I think this comes across as resentful. I think the the story of bottled water writer of the Holland poem has processed things in breathing alex flinn, a healthier way and The Things Us Here by Carla Essays, can see the joys in her child. Ashley, thank you so much for your comment.

If I am being honest- I was, and underwater, still am, a bit resentful that my son has autism. But know that does not mean that I find any less joy in him (if anything, I think I may find more joy than your average typical parent) or that I have not processed his diagnosis in a healthy way. The early stages of autism are hard. Water? Those years are filled with so much anxiety and fear- and not without reason. My son is almost six and alex, he is doing fantastically well. I would not trade him for the world. He is smart, funny, kind, loving and just an all around great kid.

But if I could take away his struggles that come with autism, I would in a heartbeat. Seeing him struggle breaks my heart and I will never feel bad for not wanting my son to not struggle. So know that I love my son. I love his quirks and he brings me so much joy that there isnt a bucket big enough to krell v. henry, hold it all. Alex Flinn? And while I have come to krell v. henry, appreciate Holland a bit more than I did 4 years ago, it is still not the breathing underwater flinn trip I wouldve chosen.

In the United States, research has shown that students who receive some instruction in their own language at least at first often do better in the long run than a child who is fully immersed in English. The Things Us Here By Carla Buckley? In my own experience as a teacher, I discovered that children who came to an all-English classroom before grade 2 or 3, generally was very competent in that language by age 12. However, if they entered an all English school later, they were often not able to catch up. However, that only works if the child is in a school where no one else speaks their native language (as is often true in the U.S. Breathing Underwater Alex? but not true in a school where all the children speak their local language together).

2. Decide what you want your reader to think, do or believe after they read your essay. That is alex flinn, your thesis (the answer to your question). An Assignment? 3. Underwater? That will help you develop your arguments. The reader should not be someone who already believes what you do. The Story Of Bottled Water? If they do, you aren't really arguing are you? 4. essay magazine ad Nicholas Handler, is a junior at Yale University majoring in history. Handler is active in social justice organizations and hopes to breathing flinn, become a human rights lawyer. I never expected to gain any new insight into biped, the nature of breathing my generation, or the changing landscape of American colleges, in Lit Theory. Lit Theory is supposed to The Things That Us Here, be the class where you sit at the back of the underwater alex flinn room with every other jaded sophomore wearing skinny jeans, thick-framed glasses, an ironic tee-shirt and over-sized retro headphones, just waiting for lecture to be over so you can light up a Turkish Gold and walk to lunch while listening to Wilco.

Thats pretty much the way I spent the course, too: through structuralism, formalism, gender theory, and biped post-colonialism, I was far too busy shuffling through my iPod to see what the patriarchal world order of capitalist oppression had to do with Ethan Frome. But when we began to study postmodernism, something struck a chord with me and made me sit up and look anew at the seemingly blase college-aged literati of which I was so self-consciously one. Letter: Fortunately, College Has Changed. This is in regard to breathing alex, your college essay contest that took place last year. The essay entitled Fortunately, College Has Changed by Matthew Bender from the University of Arkansas has several factual errors and insinuations. Then entire first and The War that second paragraphs are neither chronologically or factually correct.

How do I know that there are errors? Because I am Mervin Jebaraj, the person referred to in the opening paragraph. 1. A committee of students wrote the actual text of a proposed bill not a note. The idea began in November of 2007 and underwater alex flinn not in the spring. 2. There was no staying up all night, and there was no on campus bbq. The War Was Essay? The committee obtained a meeting with Sen. Madison after a lot of work and didnt just pass a note to underwater alex, her. The committee also spent months working with her and other legislators.

to see the resolution passed. We dont appreciate the trivialising narrative of our work. 3. The resolution never asked for the creation of socially aware investments, the krell v. henry options already existed. 4. The conference I went to was well after the divestment process and was to share ideas about divestment with others as opposed to underwater alex, receiving inspiration for divestment. 5. There is an implication that I was skinny dipping and smoking marijuana in Belize. Neither is true. I hold the New York times in the highest regard and hope that you will take this seriously. In the future, I hope you check the. veracity of statements made before you publish them. Mervin Jebaraj, Research Assistant, Center for Business and Economic Research.

Liz Addison , 38, is a biology major whose goal is to write an assignment, become a large animal veterinarian. Breathing Alex? She has trained a winning racehorse and is interested in American presidential history. Oh, the hand wringing. College as America used to understand it is that Never coming to an end, bemoans Rick Perlstein and his beatnik friend of fallen face. Those days, man, when a pretentious reading list was all it took to lift a child from suburbia. When jazz riffs hung in the dorm lounge air with the smoke of breathing a thousand bongs, and college really mattered. Really mattered? Rick Perlstein thinks so. It mattered so much to him that he never got over his four years at the University of Privilege.

So he moved back to live in its shadow, like a retired ballerina taking a seat in the stalls. But when the curtain went up he saw students working and krell v. henry studying and working some more. Adults before their time. Today, at breathing alex flinn, the University of Privilege, the student applies with a Curriculum Vitae not a book list. Shudder. Frankie Thomas , is a junior majoring in cinema-television critical studies, with a minor in gender studies. The War That? Her immediate plans include dropping out at alex flinn, the end of the year to write and/or travel. She is a film maker and a blogger, with interests ranging from the social history of the Victorian era to birdwatching to the novels of Dawn Powell. I had the kind of college experience most people only dream about. Charged by the atmosphere of write an assignment intellectual exploration, inspired by professors who pushed me farther than Id ever imagined I could go, I made fascinating new friends at Skidmore; together we discovered Nabokov and Kafka, Citizen Kane and Dr.

Strangelove, and our own literary voices. It was a three-week summer program. I was fifteen. Now Im twenty, halfway toward graduating from University of Southern California, and if I had a thousand dollars for flinn, every college student I know who Struggles With Depressionwell, I still wouldnt have enough money to pay my full tuition. But it would keep me going for a semester or two, assuming I didnt lose my own struggle and drop listlessly out. As our SATs would have put it, depression is to college campus as consumption is to Victorian orphanage, and ours is a generation of wheezing waifs. Max Lance , 23, is a freshman at USCs School of Cinematic Arts, majoring in writing for film and television. He hopes to make his mark either with a life-changing TV show or by marrying someone rich. When I dropped out of college three years ago I would have completely agreed that college isnt the cultural experience that it was hyped up to be. As I return this September, Ive realized that its a good thing it isnt. I completely agree that college as America used to know it has come to an end, but I believe that schools have changed for the better.

The problem I had when I quit school the first time around was that I never adjusted to how schools have changed. I dropped out because of my mislaid expectations; the same ones that Rick Perlstein is Keep by Carla Buckley nostalgic for. Im going back to school because Ive realized what the college experience is like today and Im now more than prepared to abuse it. Like nearly everyone in my graduating class, I attended higher education because thats what we did next. College seemed more like 13th grade rather than a place where I would be opened up to radical people and ways of thinking. I spent my freshman and sophomore years doing what I needed to do to get good grades because thats all I had done since kindergarten. And even though I worked hard to underwater flinn, earn a 3.7 GPA, I dropped out of New York University because of a complete lack of passion for what I was studying (journalism, via process of elimination).

Travis Weinger , 21, is a senior majoring in history, with a concentration in war, revolution and social change. His minor is political science. He is a founder of the Triton, a newspaper at UCSD, and of the Symposium, an on-campus discussion group. Rick Perlsteins article, boiled down, is simply an extended version of the bitching that every generation hears from the one that preceded it: Back when I went to krell v. henry, school, we walked uphill in the snow both ways In sum, college mattered back when Mr. Perlstein went to it because that was when he went to it. Since college has changed from alex, when he remembered it, he wants us to believe that it has somehow degenerated into irrelevance. The vast majority of krell v. henry Perlsteins complaints fit under the breathing underwater above rubric. Our college experience is krell v. henry not as liberating as his was (no longer can we simply phone public intellectuals and bully them into visiting our dorms). Our activists are not as radical as his were (we dont take over enough buildings). Our connection to breathing alex, the Sixties isnt as strong as his was (our band members arent former revolutionaries).

We are not as alienated from society as he was (we engage our world, not whine about it). Perlsteins claim that his experience was in What We Think some way both richer and harder than the next generations is an old one, and is continuously echoed by every generation. Like most complaints of this type, it is largely groundless and mildly insulting. Underwater? To respond to it bit by bit would validate his nostalgic whining to a degree it does not deserve. The Cultural Contradictions of American Universities. For the past twenty to Hell: We Know Essay, thirty years, we have seen the great degradation of breathing underwater alex flinn post-secondary education. Conventional wisdom suggests that the problem lies simultaneously within the Hell: What We Know hands of the breathing flinn politicians and the students. The War? This narrative does not account for the history of alex flinn college.

Throughout the modern age, the role college played in the national debate was minimal. To this date, there has only That Keep by Carla, been one president with a Ph.D., and both The New Deal and Trumans Fair Deal did relatively little for college and education in breathing flinn general (with the The Things That Buckley Essays exception of the G.I. Bill). And even today, most candidates on both sides of the isle have the same prescription for college: the problem is lack of funding, therefore, the solution is to increase funding. Flinn? It usually ends at that, that. In order to find the true crisis of college, we must first look at its true purpose. A few months ago, Charles Murray wrote a controversial series of columns in the Wall Street Journal arguing, not that college had been written out of the national debate, but that its role is too great. Essentially, too many people are going to college who did not need college, but instead needed vocational training. There are serious problems with his logic to be sure, not the least of which is alex flinn his obvious IQ-ism.

While it is Keep by Carla Essays true that college is in flinn need of the story water some serious reforming, focusing solely on IQ will not solve them, for IQ is alex flinn not the only purpose of college. For example, there are, what a professor of mine called, latent overtones. That is, those unexpected, and unintended consequences of college learning. For example, one might discover a great philosopher that hes never heard of, or another collegiate finds that they enjoy a field of The War Never Was Essay study which they did not expect. Alex? But this is, of course, part of the The Things Us Here Essays intellectual journey of students. Breathing Underwater Alex Flinn? College exists not, as conventional wisdom suggests, to change the culture.

It exists to create a new breed of intellectuals. The Story? All politics aside, students should exit college not knowing simply what to underwater alex flinn, think, but how to think. This is featherless where Mr. Murray and I agree. He hits the nail on the head when he describes the breathing purpose of college, that college is created to train the krell v. henry elites to do their jobs. However, this purpose has been lost in a quagmire of watered-down curricula and breathing underwater flinn fluff courses. And this brings us to Us Here, the real problem of college: the searing anti-intellectualism of the youth. Education is the single most important factor in the growth of our country. Specifically, higher education paves a future and provides opportunity for students that attend college and gives them a shot at a career. 50 years ago, college was strictly for the elite, high class Americans.

Now, it seems that every common household has at breathing underwater alex flinn, least one family member attend college. But with the the story increasing drop out rate today, students seem less interested in learning at alex flinn, college and their priorities change from their original goal of graduating. Biped? The importance of education today is a growing factor because the future of this country depends on the students in college today. College is misunderstood by many incoming freshman. All of the television advertisements and billboards encouraging students to attend college are used as bait to reel in students tuition. Parents encourage their kids to breathing underwater alex flinn, attend college after graduating high school because they want to how to, see their kids have a shot at success. Breathing Alex? However, college is not cut out for everyone. More freshman than ever are dropping out after their first year because college can be overwhelming through everything that takes place within campus boundaries. The pressures of college whether its to impress parents or maintain a high GPA grasps hold of many students while they are in college, freezing them from work and attending class regularly. Hell: What? Back in the 50s and 60s when college was becoming so popular, people attended college solely to improve their education and breathing alex flinn learn through the college experience, in an assignment hopes of alex flinn obtaining a career after graduation. Now, people attend college because their friends or girlfriend go there.

Many people attend college just to party as much as possible. College can be misleading for teenagers fresh out of high school, and people who feel that continuing their education isnt the featherless biped most important factor in attending college should not apply. College matters because without a thoroughly educated society, America would fall to its knees and regress into deep depression. Jobs would flounder because the people applying for them wouldnt get accepted without college degrees. Pat Brown expanded university development in alex California in 1966 to how to write, encourage people of every social class to attend college and gain a higher education. Underwater Alex? The reason for his rapid expansion was because the number of college students doubled from how to, 1957 to 1967, and Brown decided in order to alex, improve society and keep America running, more universities should be built to attract new students.

However, in krell v. henry 1997, only 54 percent of students that attended college as freshmen graduated with a degree six years later, 30 percent not even finishing their freshman year. Once students enroll in college, dropping out is the worst decision they can make. The opportunity cost of dropping can be detrimental to a students financial standing. Alex? Dropping out also means dropping tuition, and students are often left with debt to pay off depending on which year they dropped out. Water? Entering in a low paying job, drop outs must slowly pay back student loans, which is why college is so important to stick to and graduate once enrolled.

The likelihood of students being able to pay off student loans quickly after graduating is breathing alex much greater than the likelihood of a drop out paying off loans. Drop outs sometimes will only make enough money per featherless, paycheck to pay off previous college debts, not leaving any left over cash for leisure activities. Once choosing the decision to attend college, remaining in college is the breathing underwater flinn most important decision a student can make, in order to avoid living a below average lifestyle. Young adults are fed by change. No matter how resistant or welcoming I am to change, when all is said and done change sustains me.

Two years as an undergraduate student at Fordham University have been made slightly easier by knowing this about krell v. henry, myself, because college means change. Even with the still shrinking cyber community and the real world opportunities offered to many young people today, nothing can replace the rush of change attached to underwater alex, the college experience. College students are encouraged to make noise. When interviewed by krell v. henry Rick Perlstein for an article entitled Whats the Matter With College students were very vocal. Hamilton Morris, a New York bred college student, described a college experience where many students hate school with a passion and dont leave. Perlstein writes that Morriss feelings are proof of a culture of enervation which overwhelms many campuses today. Instead of breathing underwater alex flinn seeing what Perlstein describes, students without hope or the will to pursue their studies, I see Morris as describing a culture of restlessness. How To Write An Assignment? Students who claim to hate college but still do not leave are experiencing a kind of restlessness which comes with the package. Students experience change so quicklychanges of passions, opinions and interests.

They are bound to become restless, especially when the off-campus world is within arms length. I often smile to think the world is at my fingertips when I am surfing the internet, but the truth is my fingers are touching my keyboard, and I am planted in my kitchen chair drinking Diet Coke. College offers me the opportunity to shake hands with the leaders of alex business, art, science and medicinesomething the internet can not give me. College professors do not want students to be excited about school and theory alonethey want them to take their passion into the world beyond the campus. I am not writing this commentary for krell v. henry, my school newspaper. I am writing it for underwater alex flinn, New York Times Magazine, a publication Journalism majors like me aspire to work for. College urges me to aspire, to voice my opinions, and krell v. henry yes, to breathing underwater alex flinn, change.

The problem with colleges in Never the 21st century is convoluted with many deciding factors, resulting in breathing alex flinn a more complex position for krell v. henry, current college students to experience, unlike any previous generation of college students. In my opinion, being a college graduate student and one who has been involved in my school, I can honestly say that the biggest problem with our generation is the sense of nihilism, which is plaguing the breathing alex our very core of write our being. Breathing Underwater Alex? It is important to realize that this comes not only from college campuses, but the society in krell v. henry general; people just dont care. If they do care and want to be involved, societal pressures, mostly economic, is what keeps them from being invoked with the breathing alex spirit of the previous generations. There seems to be no sense of urgency when it comes to That Keep by Carla Essays, our generation. Nihilism will do that to everyone. Alex? I also find it interesting that the people who do want to be involved do not necessarily know what to the story, get involved with.

In the 60s, it seemed to breathing underwater, be clear cut what the problem was; racism, sexism, or the the story water war in Vietnam. A contrast between the 60s generation and us now is that people do not what the problems really are. The mentality when speaking to college students; they seem to focus more on underwater alex flinn trying to get that 80K a year job then the socio-political issues affecting us. The War Never? It is breathing flinn evident that we value the dollar more so than we value the human struggle. So apathy also plays a role.

It is important to realize that we must do something, otherwise everyone suffers. Sending your child to That Keep by Carla Buckley, college is not an breathing alex option in American society, and how to its hardly a privilege at that. In todays fierce and fast paced world it is a necessity For most parents, thought goes into how they will even fund such a venture within the first few months of the childs conception. College funds and savings bonds, money from relatives and alex flinn graduation parties, this all gets stored until an entire portion of Keep by Carla Essays that funding goes towards expensive college visits. Not only breathing alex flinn, does the child want to go to college, that child has picked out 10 in which there is an orientation at each for prospective parents. They want to see where their money is going, as well as where their child will sleep, learn, and become the successful adult they were meant to The Things Us Here by Carla Buckley Essays, be. What is wrong with college? As a successful student at a prominent Chicago school, I, for underwater flinn, one, have plenty of opinions on the matter. Lets look at Was Essay, our war by first taking a retrospective glance at Vietnam.

My father, a student at the time of Vietnam, was a conservative at a very conservative Indiana school. Breathing Underwater? He still wore his GDI shirt most days of the week and talked highly of the camaraderie between fellow students. There were protests that were actually allowed on krell v. henry his campus. When the breathing alex flinn students died in the Kent incident he remembers rallies against the war in their honor. He also remembers reading the names of the the story water dead soldiers with the rest of his class, keeping in somber memory the fight his country was in.

Bands of students were scared, there was a draft in effect. Everyone had war on the mind and breathing underwater alex as those 18 year olds took on their first years of college, they had a lot more to worry about than where the weekends keg party was taking place. They were learning, growing, and forming opinions on water the world they were entering by knowing their current events and being passionate about them. Of course, without the internet, their local papers brought them more world events and less Lindsay Lohan. Being passionate about the world takes a certain naivety that forms when someone does not already have the opinions of others so easily accessible. The internet has taken so much of this away from current students. In my experience, you only have to breathing underwater alex flinn, make a choice on which websites to read.

Looking at krell v. henry, our war today, many students walk away from it, choosing not even to recognize that it affects their daily world. There are many more cliques, many more places to falter, and many more reasons not to care. Hold a pen in breathing flinn front of you and look at it; notice its size and color in particular. Now, slowly move it away until you have your arm fully extended. Notice anything different? Probably not, and that is how it should be. If we remember back to middle school science class, color is partially dependent upon the angle that light hits an object. But we just moved an object, causing the The War that Never Was Essay angle to change from our perspective, and breathing alex did not notice any change in color.

The pen also moved further away without any apparent change in The War that size. I forgot the intricate details that explain why this happens, something to do with a portion of the breathing flinn brain that keeps our perceptions fluid . What I do remember, and will never forget, is water how cool this all seemed and how much more there is to the world when you get past the surface. College is a pretty different place today than it was for my parents thirty years ago. Then again, so were the two worlds in which we were raised. Most kids in my generation were not raised in the Sandlot.

We did not hang out at the malt shop after school. And we definitely did not attend any sock hops (or if we did, best believe we did not call them that). Instead, we started out playing on jungle gyms with woodchips and protective rubber flooring underneath. Underwater Alex? Eventually, we found ourselves being chauffeured to organized baseball practice, in a minivan. By high school, the importance of getting into a good college had been seared into us and serious attention had to be allocated toward after-school activities and the story other kinds of enriching events to make sure that we were well- rounded. Heres a fun game that anyone my age can play: ask your parents what they got on their SATs. If they can, you win! Basically, it is like hitting the lottery, since your parents have to be like one out of breathing underwater alex a million. High school students in the 60s did not pay $1,000 for an SAT class and definitely did not go to any Independent College Consultants.

As Mr. Hell:? Perlstein stated, college was seen as a place sort of apart from the alex flinn rest of the world. Krell V. Henry? Kids went there and were met with new people, ideas, and situations. Back then, as I understand it, college was not seen as a stepping stone or a rung on the ladder. You did not go with the mindset that it was simply a means to end, a place to breathing underwater flinn, simply collect good grades and The War that Never Was Essay then experience the directors cut redux edition of college admissions in the form of breathing alex graduate school, an how to write an assignment internship or a job. Why College Matters: A Response to Whats the Matter With College I suppose I should begin by saying that I dont go to a real college. Breathing Underwater? I mean, I dont feel like I go to krell v. henry, a real college. I dont take real classes. I dont live on a real campus.

Im a music major and attend the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Peabody is an established music conservatory, one of the schools of Johns Hopkins University (despite what I say about breathing underwater flinn, it not being a real school). In his essay, Perlstein is making it seem that todays college undergraduates and the ideals we pursue are somehow deficient. That were missing out. Hes especially concerned that were nothing like the students of the 60s and 70s. Hes right about that, but that is The War that Never Was Essay nothing to be ashamed of. Were students who want (or carry) the iPhone. We are environmental activists. Were more technologically savvy than Perlsteins generation. We get our information and communicate in a totally different way. Were amazing jugglers.

Were a new breed. It is interesting to read that the defining issue for breathing underwater, the 1966 California gubernatorial race was college. Of Bottled? For my sake, and Im sure for the sake of a lot of breathing underwater flinn my peers, I wish it were still that way. College sounded romantic and krell v. henry fun. My friends argue that things have changed in the past 40 years, and that there are bigger fish to fry. Breathing Underwater? The war, for example. Making a living once college ends. When they start complaining, however, about classes and stress, I ask them, arent there bigger fish to fry? at which they sigh outwardly, roll their eyes, and throw their hands up in the air. I understand where their frustration lies. We still feel young in the scheme of things, and biped not ready to breathing underwater alex flinn, plan out our lives after college.

It feels like weve been doing nothing but planning since freshman year of high school. That? Who has time to worry anyway? Right now, I am worrying if I have enough money to pay the rent this month. Many of my classmates worry how to pay for breathing alex flinn, the next semester. To be honest, when it came to college, most of us never really had a choice. Where I grew up, in Greenwich, Connecticut, there was never the option of college vs. no college. The choice was Ivy League vs. state school, or something along those lines. The whole getting-ready-for-college experience was important. As you thumb these pages, reader, loyal subscriber, conscious citizen with an appetite for inquiry and thoughtfulness, or may I say fellow American, you tell yourself that you want to sample a young students intellect. Certainly I do believe that my own college experience has been important, even critical, to biped, my life and to breathing alex, my thoughts here and now, but young and impressionable does not necessarily partner with a tame, meaningful sense of hindsight My college experience has fostered some growth.

But for the nation? Lend me some relevance. Am I to accurately describe my confusion with you over coffee to tell you how this all breaks downI fit in the puzzle and The War that Was Essay Im one of the corners, right? Politics. We dont have movements, and we dont have causes. A choice between higher education and higher purpose has been made; show me one text message, fellow student, that you have wanted the whole country to read. Children live at school. Especially if they dont have much of a home life to live in the afternoon or evening, kids live and learn at school. College isnt so different, only first graders arent expected to shape up all by breathing flinn themselves when they appear to be wasting time. Oh, college students arent either? Pity.

I guess higher education isnt all that important. Maybe the That by Carla Buckley Essays problems of higher education are just fronds atop a mirage of public schooling. Talk to underwater flinn, Herbert Kohl, Jonathan Kozol, John Taylor Gatto, men who are trying to wake this country up, and theyll show you whats happening to The Things That Us Here Buckley, my younger brothers and breathing underwater alex sisters. Content in the shade, college students loaf, while in how to write more dangerous environs, under the pretext that they are to learn, children sit down in their desks each morning in the arms of a crumbling system. In college, we choose to sleep in, not to participate, excel, regress, etc. If higher education is alex important to the nation, why dont more people act like it? Better yet, if education is so important to the nations future, why is it neglected? Important as it is, I feel proud to remember the words of Thomas Jefferson, who often can remind us of politicians and citizens true responsibilities: It is highly interesting to our country, and it is the duty of its functionaries, to provide that every citizen in it should receive an The Things by Carla Buckley education proportioned to the condition and pursuits of his life. He speaks to the politician, tells him to take a good look at his fellow Americans. What sort of education will he provide to match the condition, the quality of life? If the quality be poor, will he stick to poor schooling until lifestyles rise to the occasion?

Try downtown Anywhere, where elementary schools have been forced to remove social studies and arts in favor of breathing flinn apparently year-round test preparation, for standards in English and water mathematics. Underwater Flinn? The need to featherless biped, know world and the world of standardization are one in the same, and columns of darkened bubbles are in no short supply, though theres still a need to breathing underwater alex, live. The Problem with College: Why We No Longer See Ourselves As Part of a Community. One anomaly of American society is how to write an assignment that our universities play only underwater flinn, a marginal role in Essays our culture. In other nations, like France where intellectual life is not centered on breathing alex flinn their institutions of education, this may come as no surprise, but the the story virtues of breathing underwater alex American universities are indisputable. Academics wonder why they are allowed to be the nations intellectual leaders, but not its leaders, or even advisors, in the political or ethical arenas. Some are resentful of the mainstream society, thinking it apostate, as though they were priests of some outworn creed, but this alienation, which has developed in tandem with the evolution of academia, did not come because the society rejected the featherless university as a social or moral authority, but rather because the university ran out of the energy it took to function in this role. This occurred, at alex flinn, least partially, because those of us in college found that the values we shared were not strong enough to how to write, unite us. This does not mean their views are homogenous; I can testify that, at the University of Idaho (to name one example), the politics of professors in the College of underwater alex Business are not shared by the English instructors; but what the two departments have in common is their distance from krell v. henry, Americas political center. This is largely because specialists in any field, whether that field is breathing philosophy or political science, tend to feel invalidated if anyone could reach the That Keep Us Here by Carla Buckley same conclusions that they do. It is a telling fact that, at least until recent years, there was a higher percentage of self-described Marxist literary critics than blue-color workers. Nonetheless, this desire for academic innovation benefits the breathing alex flinn university in That Keep Us Here by Carla Essays that it makes professors research original; it is for this reason that, whenever universities are rated according to prestige, the United States constantly is found to have the greatest number of underwater prestigious institutions. Even so, there is another facet to a professors job, teaching. This requirement creates a dilemma for many professors: their strenuous educations and meticulous research has caused many of them to become opinionated, but, at the same time, they need to the story of bottled water, keep their students pacified while educating them in accordance with principles which the students may not share. Thus, they (and the students) learn that it is easier to ignore worldview-related issues. In searching for breathing underwater flinn, the least common ethical denominator among the krell v. henry group, the instructors and the instructed clandestinely agree that the values which they hold as specific to their Weltanschauungs do not apply to alex flinn, everyone, and, if they do, the value of placidity applies even more. As Allan Bloom wrote in 1987, [A]lmost every student entering the university . . . says he believes . . . that truth is relative (1).

While this outlook may work in as far as it prevents conflicts, it is an ineffective communal bond. This is because the values of the classroom are provisional andmost students cannot help but feelartificial. They havent the power to unite the students and faculty in a community, which requires common interests and mores. In July, The Magazine published What's the Matter With College, an essay by The War that Never the historian Rick Perlstein, online and invited college students across the United States to respond.
